In this assignment, students are to create a large silhouette shape of their liking. They have to then use math to divide that shape into 12 – 20 equals parts. From there, students must create a unique patterns within each shape. The last step is coloring in each pattern with at least 2 colors to complete the patterned design project.

Ceramics are here at Smith! Our awesome 7th graders were given the opportunity to create functional ceramics that they could eat or drink out of. Their inspiration or objective was to create a gift for Mom or Dad for Mothers/ Fathers Day, or create a favorite animal or food as the jumping off point to create. When dry and fired, students were to paint the clay with food safe glaze so now they can eat/drink out of a vessel they made themselves. It’s great to see their faces when you show them the completed work. Now to get the art home without breaking…..
Attached to the link is the study guide and vocabulary list for the Ceramic and Sculpture unit. Understanding these concepts will help you design, create, and assess your art work created in class and will also prepare you for any high school art electives.
From April 4 – 10, we will be creating projects out of cardboard and/or paper mache. Students can choose from any animal that swims or flies. I will post results when the projects are done.

Tiny House Design. In this lesson we talked about the careers of engineering, architecture, city planning, and exterior design before designing our own little worlds. Students started by using math concepts to draw and and design a 6 x 8 inch house out of one piece of paper. We talked about building materials and aesthetics to create a realistic structure to live in. From there they had to incorporate a chimney roof, and porch to compliment their design. To finish it off, students received an acre of “land” to create a yard that could facilitate their hobbies and dreams. They had a great time making the items in the yard as you can see!

In this assignment, our objective was to create a Greek style Temple using only paper and a copy paper box lid. We first studied the history and particular style, purposes and materials of Grecian temples. We then determined how to create the shapes with paper and then drew, colored, cut, glued and assembled them. It was great to see the students applying an historical reference to their work!
