Hey there kids, I hope you are continuing to be well out there, and your families are healthy and safe! Today is our weekly turn in day for the week and I can’t wait to see what you’ve been up to art wise. Remember to attach your files to the Google Classroom, or if your having difficulty with that, just email me the photos at kades@dearbornschools.org I’ve already seen some great stuff including sculptures, baked items, LEGO projects, tye dyed items and more! Next week you’ll have more choices and I’ll post them Sunday night. Be well!

Wednesday Update: March 25
First off I wanted to say I miss seeing you all everyday, my life isn’t quite as exciting without you. I hope that you have mastered the art of self distancing and your families are doing well despite the weirdness of the world right now. All will be right again in time. I wanted to clear up a few things here as I’ve been getting questions, so here we go.
- The end of the 3rd Marking Period is this Friday. This includes all up assignments UP TO WHEN WE LEFT, not after. I had all your grades put in before we left. Please check Student Connect to see if you are missing anything, and contact me if you see any mistakes. There were a few clay pieces that had no name on them and I couldn’t give anyone credit for them. I will submit final grades this Friday at 4pm.
- For this weeks assignment, EVERY CLASS had choices of whether to make a full color picture with background OR a sculpture of your choice using whatever materials you have. I forgot to announce you could include baking or making dinner for your family. Art and Cooking (Culinary Arts) have something in common: you take many different things and put them together to make one greater thing!
- If you are having trouble uploading your images to Google Classroom, no worries, just send them to me through email if its easier: kades@dearbornschools.org
- Most importantly, use your art to escape from the stress of the world as your focus becomes more centered to what you are DOING at the time. Have Fun!!!!!
Week #2 March 22- 27th Assignment
Because everyone can’t have the same materials at home, I need to make sure we’re all supported and can have fun while maintaining our creative skills, so i’m giving you some choices. This week you can choose your creative specialty, either a colored illustration, or making a sculpture from found objects. Your project should reflect 5 hours of work if you are in 7 or 8th grade, or 3 hours of work if you are in 6th grade. I have included many attachments to help you choose a project, and you are more than welcome to choose your own, just be CREATIVE and HAVE FUN! Here are the projects:
- 2D Art: One or more Drawings on 9 inch x 12 inch paper or bigger. It should be a favorite character of choice (original or existing) in a background that suits the character. It should be fully colored or shaded with whatever materials you have. It helps to use reference photos or drawing tutorials to draw more accurately, so check out Google, YouTube, or favorite sites to find great poses and background.
- 3D Art: a Sculpture you can make out of whatever materials you can find around your house. This can be cereal or macaroni boxes, paper, cardboard, or any building materials or whatever you have a lot of- even origami, and LEGO if you have it! Check out YouTube for Papercraft or other tutorials on just about any subject you can imagine. Have fun, no rules, just use the skills we’ve learned in class.
- Artist Choice- Write me an email, tell me what you’re thinking about making, and we’ll see if it’s possible and how I can help you!
Food Distribution at Smith through April 3rd
Dearborn Schools has announced that O.L. Smith will be added as a student meal distribution site starting on Monday, March 23.
On Monday, March 30, Dearborn Public Schools is changing the format of its free student meal distributions.
Meals will now be distributed three times a week, instead of five.
Meals will generally be distributed on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. However, the week of April 6 to 10, meals will be handed out on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Friday, April 10, is Good Friday and a holiday for District staff.
Fewer meal distributions should make it easier for families to get the food while reducing the risk of virus exposure for both our families and our staff. Each food bag will still contain both breakfast, lunch and milk for a child under 18, but now the bag will have food for each day until the next distribution.
The grab-and-go meals will continue to be handed out between 10 a.m. and noon at the same seven schools. The Dearborn Schools student does not have to attend that school to be eligible for a meal. A designated person can pick up meals for multiple children. The student does not need to be present.
End of Week #1: Assignment Due
Hello students! I hope you are doing well during this time away. Your focus should be on staying healthy and trying to do our best to maintain normalcy in our lives (including some school work) to keep our minds busy and on track to return soon. I hope you’ve been keeping up with most of your work (when you can) and are ready to turn in your work today or throughout the weekend. I will be marking you down as completing it in Google Classroom, and in Gradebook. I will not be making it a live grade that affects your overall grade at this point, I’m just maintaining a log of who turns work in for the 3 weeks we’re off. If you have trouble uploading to Google Classroom, just email me the work. Next week we’ll look into what we can build around the house as we are a 3D Class too! Stay safe, be creative, and remember that creating is escapism, and takes our mind off of life!
Thursday Check In
Hello students! I hope all is well for you and your family. I just wanted to check in with some info for tomorrow’s due date to turn in your drawing work to Google Classroom. You can upload all the work to Google Classroom so I can mark you down as completed. You may take pictures of each drawing, or group them all together in one picture if that’s easier (just make sure they are close to one another). If you haven’t joined Google Classroom please do if possible. If you have any trouble uploading, no worries, you can just email them to me at kades@dearbornschools.org. It’s also okay if you do this over the weekend, but Monday we’ll have a new set of activities for you to complete. Any questions, feel free to ask them! Stay Healthy, Stay Safe, and remember Art is Therapy to make things better!
Today’s Update: Tues. March 17
Hello kids! Most importantly, I hope you and your family are doing well and are adjusting to our new situation of Remote Learning. It’s most important to remember that these things are being handled as best as they can, and we will get through this separately (yet together online) and get back to normal soon. Your goal over this time is to maintain your art skills and upload your work weekly if you can. If not, put your name and date on the work and save to give to me when we get back. I want to answer some questions:
- You can use ANY paper you can find to sketch on. If you can’t find any use, paper bags, junk mail, or the other side of old assignments teachers have given you. It does not need to be a sketchbook at all, even blue lined paper. Be creative!
- You can draw anything you want, the attachments were just suggestions. It’s always good to draw things from real life, but your imagination is equally awesome too!
- I am expecting that most of the paper be filled with drawing, not just a small thing in the middle, draw big, it’s easier! Also, think of backgrounds for what you are making.
- Shading and coloring are a bonus and will make your art look EVEN BETTER! I plan on putting all your work up in the hall when we get back, it’ll be your time to SHINE!
- STAY POSITIVE!!! WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS! BE CREATIVE, HAVE FUN!

In order to make it easier to see and upload assignments for grading while we are working from home, I have created a Google Classroom for each of my Art classes. The links to them, and the classroom codes to join are below. Please join your class as soon as possible to keep updated with the assignments. This blog will also be updated with news and alternative assignments if you didnt want to draw and color pictures.

Art Room Update
Hello students,
Due to Dearborn Public Schools being closed for a month this clearly affects what we can create in class. This is certainly unfortunate for all of us, but work is expected to be done during this time out of school. This is not a break until the 4th week we have off, so 3 weeks of work is expected so we can come back to school and continue our momentum for the rest of the year.
This work does not need to be complicated as we know not all of us have art supplies around the house. My expectations will be that students keep a regular sketchbook of drawings, and spend 1 hour a day (5 days a week, for 3 weeks) drawing something. Below are a few links of ideas in case you can’t think of what to draw. In the coming days, I will also give some ideas in new posts for building things around the house as we are a 3D Art class.
