This week in class, we’ll have a couple things to focus on. First, students will be finishing up their NWEA testing for the fall. Some students are still completing the Language test, and others are finishing up the Reading test. All students have been recording their scores, as well as their lowest skill set (growth skill) for each test on page 4 of their planners. If your student has finished, ask them to show you page 4. They will be coming up with goals soon based on their “growth skill”.
Additionally, we will be continuing to read Seedfolks, by Paul Fleischman. Students will read chapter 6 on Monday, and will think aloud with their partners on Tuesday. We will progress this week towards students documenting their own thoughts while reading, with the goal of sending home reading logs as homework by the second week of October. Students will practice in class for about a week and a half before we make this a required individual assignment. This way, students are comfortable with the assignment and know the expectations before they are expected to complete the assignment on their own.
Lastly, we’ll begin focusing on character traits and theme by taking notes on Tuesday. Students will look at characters in Seedfolks, more Pixar shorts, and other short narratives to determine the theme or “THE MEssage” in the stories. Students will be expected to complete IXL.com 6th grade B.2 before we test on Thursday, October 3rd. They should score 90 or above for full credit.
Please have your student show you their student connect this week. Progress reports will be coming out next week and I’d like to have all grades correct by this Thursday, Sept. 26th. Please let me know if there are any grading discrepancies.
