However, today, as I collected your Valentines and gifts for the children in the hospital, I literally got tears in my eyes! You thoughtfulness and generosity is beyond compare! The hand drawn and hand written individual messages to the children are so touching! I cannot say it enough….thank you for all you do and giving me the amazing privilege to be your child’s teacher! Tomorrow, please join me at 11 AM to 11:15 as I deliver 163 Valentines to Battalion Chief Worden. I am sure when he delivers these lovely Valentines to the children at the hospital, you and your children will be part of the reason why so many of them will be smiling and feeling extra loved!

Take a look at some of the terrific things we did today!
We read a Benchmark poem about technology we use at home. We then drew a picture of a machine that uses technology in our homes. We wrote and told about it too! So as stated above we wrote about machines that help us in our home. We also check to see if our finished written piece included the following; First and last name (which I blurred out), detailed drawing that is colored with multiple colors, and a sentence that uses letters and sounds coming together to help tell our idea. We also look for a period at the end of the sentence too! That tells us our sentence is over!!! Great writing today, my friends!I created some Google Slide assignments that go along with our Benchmark lessons. The children did one for letter Rr as a Formative Assessment for things that begin with the sound of R. They had to click and drag the pictures that begin with Rr into the circle! We practiced handwriting the letter Rr.
We also listened to another amazing story for Black History Month! We listened to a story about musician Ella Fitzgerald! In addition, we listened to a story from Benchmark and identified both the setting of the story and the characters!
In math today we practiced using a subtraction symbol called minus to take away. After lunch we had our first Nearpod lesson!!!! It was fun! We learned more about needs and wants and goods and services!
PLEASE do not forget to make, create, or buy your Valentines for the children in the hospital!
Just a reminder, I will be coming by around 12 noon on Friday this week to pick up your child’s Valentines for our outreach project. Please have them in a bag or box on your porch. I will not knock on your door so as to not disturb your family. PLEASE have them on the porch no later than 12 noon. Then on Saturday I will meet at the fire station to deliver them to Battalion Chief Worden who is so kindly going to deliver the Valentines to the children who are in the hospital. You are all welcomed to join me at the station on Saturday at 11:00. This will be a quick visit though. PLEASE if you come, remember to wear your mask.
One more thing…..we will be having a parent/family meeting tomorrow at 12:25. PLEASE plan on attending or send someone who can relay the information back to you!
Take a look at some of the amazing things we did on this awesome start to week 22!
In addition to the work samples you will see below, we also identified the main topic of our Benchmark poem! The main topic was a toaster!! We also practiced making a connection to a story! This is when your child listens to or reads a story and they make a personal connection between a story event and something that happened to them!
We mixed and fixed the sight word; littleWe illustrated and labeled things that begin with the sound of Rr.This friend drew a raccoon for her item that begins with Rr.We went on a hunt to review the sound for the letter Ww. this friend found wheels on a fire engine!
We practiced number fluency with finger flashed to 20!Please do not forget to have your Valentines ready for pick up on your porch for Friday afternoon at 12:00.
Valentine’s Day is a day we set aside to show extra love! Love is such an important and fullfiling emotion, but it also something that can be express and shared! So, for our outreach project we are teaming up with Battalion Chief Worden from the Dearborn Fire Department to spread some love and Valentine wishes to children who are in the hospital!
The Young 5s and their families will make Valentines or cards that will be dropped off to the children who are in the hospital. You can color pictures and write a message that says things like…. “You are cared for!” “Feel better soon!” “I hope this puts a smile on your face.” I am sure my loving and caring students can think of many ways to express love on these special little notes! The children can draw or decorate hearts. You may also purchase boxed Valentines for your child to give as well. Your child can write their first name, but not their last name on their Valentines!
So….you might be thinking…how you get these to me? I will be by on Friday, Feb. 12th. Please have your Valentines in a bag on your porch by 12 noon! Our goal is for each Young 5 student and their family to have 5 to 10 Valentines each to pass out to the sick children. This could possibly make a total of 160 Valentines!!! Please help us meet our goal!!
Then, on Saturday, Feb. 13th I will take these Valentines to Battalion Chief Worden at the station on Greenfield at 12 noon. You are welcome to wear a mask and join me as I deliver these Valentines! I will only be there til 12:15 since this is a drop off.
I am so excited to team up with our local community fire department and help children like yours who are sick in the hospital! I am even more excited to spread love to others!
Today we enjoyed some wonderful read alouds for World Read Aloud Day!
Thank you, Mrs. Dakhlallah for informing us of this special world-wide event and for sharing the link to listen to authors read to us live!!!
We listened to Lucille Colandro read There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Cactus live!!! Children from all over our big world were selected to read aloud too as well as ask the author questions!! This went along well with the Benchmark Unit we finished not too long ago. We talked about why do authors write stories during that unit!!! How awesome to hear from a real life author!!! If you would like to visit this World Read Aloud site to listen to other authors live please click here.
Take a look at what we did as engineers this morning! In addition to being engineers, we practiced directionality while reading, counted syllables, recognized letters and sounds, and compared the past and present uses of technology at home and at school. We also had a lovely visit from Mrs. Torres. She taught the students how to draw beautiful roses! And, of course we practiced counting by ones and tens to 100 and reviewed 2D shapes. We also practiced counting groups of ten.
We used our reading finger with our Benchmark text to practiced directionality. We built “burrows” during engineering time for our groundhog puppets! Then we investigated if our groundhogs came out and saw their shadows!Mrs. Torres taught us how to draw lovely roses! We built “burrows” during engineering time for our groundhog puppets! Then we investigated if our groundhogs came out and saw their shadows! This friend remembered that we learned groundhogs have burrows with two rooms…one for eating and sleeping, and one for using the bathroom!
KidTime Story Time; Read aloud of Groundhug Day!
Please reply to the blog with your child’s favorite read aloud that you enjoy together! My son, when he was little, enjoyed many books. The two that stick out the most are Goodnight God by Holly Bea and Digger Man by Andrea Zimmerman and David Clemesha. Week 21 Schedule for Young 5s
Friday there will be no school for all Kindergarten and Young 5 friends.
Take a look at some of the fun learning that took place today! We also read a Benchmark story and identified that the setting of the story was outer space! We practiced counting syllables of items we found in the kitchen as well as identifying their beginning sounds. In addition, we blended sounds that after substituting phonemes in the word!
We practiced recognizing the difference between the graphemes b and d. It is developmental for young children to see letters and reverse them such as in the case of the b and d. However, practice and exposure to writing and creating the letters as we did here with play dough is a great way to help us learn!
b and d Reversal with Jack HartmannWe drew a train with 2D shapes and practiced decomposing a group of 7 train cars using a number sentence and 2 different colored crayons!
