Happy First Week of Virtual Y5 in 2021!!!!

Hello Families!

I hope you all have enjoyed the break and time off of screens! I know I have enjoyed the time with loved ones! However, I have missed my little friends very much!!! I am looking forward to seeing their adorable smiling faces on Monday!

I wish you all a 2021 that is full of God’s blessings as well as good health for you and all of your loved ones! 2020 certainly had its challenges, but it had many wonderful surprises and moments as well! But, as we head into a new year, let us not forget to be mindful and grateful for all of what we have and WHO we have around us! Let us not take for granted anything! I know we all have learned and gained so much heading out of 2020 and into 2021. I am excited for all that is come with school, family, and a new year full of hope and possibilities! I am thankful we get to share it all together!

Our Last Day of School for 2020!!!

Hello Families!

I am so blessed and feel so honored to get to spend time each week day with your children on Zoom! As we close out 2020 I want to thank all of you for all you do for your children at home! You are such an important part of their happiness and success! Thank you all so much! I wish all of you a very Merry Christmas and super blessed and healthy New Year!!!

Take a look at how we ended our week!

We added 4 more letters to our flash card collection to practice matching the upper and lowercase letters as we say the letter’s name and sound.
We listened to “Merry Christmas Big Hungry Bear” by Don and Audry Wood. We made predictions of what we think will be inside of Mouse’s big present!
This friend predicts there will be a car inside of the present.

We are working on adding color and detail to our drawings too!
This friend predicted there will be food and water inside of the present. Maybe because we have been learning about the needs of living things!
We used 2D shapes to draw Santa! We orally identified the 2D shapes we used!

We will have a sing along today with other Oakman classes and Mrs. F.! Thank you, Mrs. F. for this awesome and joyous experience for the children and staff!!! The sing a long will be on the Zoom link I sent from Mrs. F. at 2:00.

Look at all of the Christmas Spirit Week fun we had today, on Thankful Thursday!

Hello Families!

I hope you all have enjoyed this snowy day! It is so beautiful to see the white snow falling outside the window! The children and I have had some fun with snowmen and….. SANTA and MRS. CLAUS! They came to my house to visit us on Zoom! What a surprise!!! Your children are so special, they came all they way from the North Pole!

Tomorrow is Pajama Day!!! Your child can wear their pajamas on Zoom!!!

Today was Dress Like a Snowman Day!
We used snow from outside to make our own snowmen!!!
We were creative with what to use for eyes and nose!
This friend used birthday cake candles for her snowman’s arms.
This friend used a pencil for the snowman’s nose!
This friend used straws for the snowman’s arms!
This friend used a baby carrot for the snowman’s nose!
These friends worked together to create their snowman!
This friend used crayons for their snowman’s body parts.
I introduced the children to the math concept of area! Area is the space inside of a shape. We drew a rectangle and found the area of our rectangle using cubes for the units.
We stretched the word snowman to write all of the sounds that we hear. We also clapped the syllables for snowman!! Snowman has 2 syllables!
We are really enjoying Reading Eggs!

We had a very special visit from Santa and Mrs. Claus!!! Thank you, Mrs. Peterson for joining us!!

We counted to 100 with Santa and Mrs. Claus!
Santa read “The Night Before Christmas” by Clement Clark Moore
Santa brought his beautiful wife, Mrs. Claus!
We asked Santa questions and sang songs together!
Merry Christmas to all!!!

We have been having such a great last week of 2020!!! Tomorow we will have two very special visitors on Zoom….from the North Pole!!! Please be sure to join us on Zoom at 2:45 for the surprise!!!

Hello Families!

This was such a great week with the children on Zoom! So many are participating and submitting work on Schoology! I am seeing such incredible work! Thank you!

Take a look at what we did today!

We made more flash cards to add to our memory game for matching upper and lowercase letter!
We practiced the letter Ss!!!
We drew to sort pictures of things that begin with the letter Ss sound….. spoon, snake, and swing.
We are beginning to learn about capacity! We explored the capacity of different containers in our home by pouring water!
We used 4 different sizes of containers to investigate capacity!
We discussed which container has the most capacity for holding the most amount of water.
Please remember, Monday starts Spirit Week!!! Please take a look at what we will be doing for each day!
“Take a Step Back and Ask for Help” We learned about asking for help and that it is more than ok to use respectful and calm voice to ask for help.

Oakman’s Gingerbread House Decorating Competition- Submit a 1 minute video by Monday

Are you ready to get creative and have some family fun? We are hosting a Gingerbread House Decorating Competition and you are all invited!

For this competition, we are asking that you DO NOT use a gingerbread house kit.

Get creative and use items such as graham crackers, pretzels, cookies, candy and more

Be sure to create a plan, gather your supplies and most importantly, HAVE FUN!

When you are all done decorating, make a ONE MINUTE VIDEO of your completed house and email the video to Mr. Abu-Rus (aburusm@dearbornschools.org)

Please submit all videos by noon on Monday, December 14th to be eligible for a drawing to win a prize!

What we did today….Thankful Thursday!

Hello Families!

I am so thankful for another day of seeing my students’ smiles and hearing their laughter on Zoom.

Take a look at what we did today! I hope you all enjoyed the time with Reading Eggs this afternoon.

We practiced the letter Pp! We wrote the letter and found items in our homes that begin with the letter Pp’s sound.
We learned what an illustrator does! Then we became illustrators after reading the “The Biggest Christmas Tree Ever” by Steven Kroll
We read a Benchmark book online and practiced word by word match!
Then we wrote an I can….sentence!
We practiced an addition story problem.
We made our own balance scales to investigate how to keep the scale balanced with pennies.

We illustrated the main topic of our informational book…..reindeer!

What we did today….wonderful Wednesday

Hello Families!

We had another wonderful Wednesday! Tomorrow we will have our Morning Zoom meeting. However, due to meetings, I will not be on Learning Labs. The children will have a fun learning activity to do!

Take a look at what we did today!

We discussed how to keep our pan balance scale leveled (or balanced) by find equal quantities to measure.
We did a story problem. There were 5 snowballs. The sun came out and melted 3 snowballs. How many snowballs are left?
We listened to “Tough Cookie” by Edward Hemingway. We discussed the importance of the illustrations to help tell the story. We noticed detail that the tough cookie had a string on his head…..because he wasn’t a cookie….he was an ornament! We then illustrated our own tough cookies and made them into ornaments.
During Wednesday STEM we made Christmas trees and decorated them!

Next Week is the last school week of 2020! Take a look at what we will b doing for Spirit Week!

What we did today….Terrific Tuesday!

Hello Families!

We had another terrific Tuesday!

We told and illustrated the problem in the story for Olive the Other Reindeer by Otto Seibold! Santa’s sleigh got stuck in a tree!
We drew what would happen if we were on a seesaw with a kitten! We are heavier than a kitten.
We did a RAN chart for reindeer! Then we drew reindeer!
We found our new sight word, all, in the message!

PLEASE keep this a surprise, but for your planning purposes, Santa and Mrs. Claus will be joining our zoom session at 2:45 to 3:45 on Thursday, Dec. 17th.
