Hello Families!

Today we went on a leaf hunt. We will use these leaves for science investigations using our 5 senses this week!

We also practiced brainstorming words that being with the letter Ll. One of the words we came up with is lion. To tie this learning into non-fiction text, we read an informational book about lions. We created a thinking map of facts we learned about lions from the text. Then we tied this learning into writing by illustrating a fact about lions. Tomorrow we will write our fact about lions that matches our idea in the illustration.

We practiced recognizing the quantity on a ten frame and finding the matching number. We also played a subitizing game on dreambox.com to practice quickly identifying the quantity of numbers 1 through 10 on a ten frame. Here is the link. The game is under resources, then teacher tools. Click here for dreambox.

In addition to all of this fun and learning we used our sense of smell and taste to answer the question, “Do you like pumpkin pie?” The children hypothesized (guessed) which column would have the most friends… the yes column or the no column. After this yummy investigation the children wrote their answers and we graphed to gather our data. The results indicated that 19 friends like pumpkin pie and 6 friends did not!

PLEASE see me if you did not sign up for conferences!!! Conferences begin next week. Attending conference is SUPER important. Thanks!!!

Also, Care to the Core Rally for anti-bullying and positive behavior is Thursday at 6:00 at the Ford Community and Performing Arts Center. This is a fun and free event for the whole family.

Also, please check the homework ideas link. I uploaded a calendar that provides daily homework assignments for your child for the month of November.

Thank you for all you do!!

Hello Families!

Happy Halloween to all of you who are celebrating! We had a bit a a different day as far as our schedule goes to fit in all of the festivities planned in our classroom.

Today was a super exciting day with lots of laughter and excitement in the air!

We learned a poem called “The 5 Little Pumpkins”. Please check your child’s folder for this poem. We practiced identifying end punctuation as well as uppercase letters using this poem.

Then we tied in math. We wrote numbers 1-5 on pumpkins and placed them in number order on the gate!

Thank you to the parents who came in to visit during math workshop!!! I hope you had a awesome time! Each of you were absolutely amazing with the children when working at your math workshop stations. The children played different math games that focus on counting and cardinality. One game even tied in graphing skills. 🙂

This afternoon, we ended our day by reading one of our new favorite books called, “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda Williams. This is such a fun book to read with children!!! They really get into telling the story as it is read aloud.

We also made the cutest and yummiest spiders for a special Halloween treat! These were created with Oreos and pretzel sticks!

I hope you all have a safe time trick or treating this evening (if you plan on going). Please remember safety first!

Thank you for all you do!

Pumpkins!!! 10/25

Hello Families!

Today was another fantastic day at Miller!

We practiced identifying non-fiction books and what makes these books non-fiction. I read a non-fiction book called “The Pumpkin Book” by Gail Gibbons. Gail Gibbons is a well known author of informational books. The children and I brainstormed a list of facts about pumpkins from the book.

We also practiced stretching for the sounds in words as we wrote facts about pumpkins. Here is an example of what I mean by stretching for the sounds. This is what a “stretched” sentence would like in kindergarten. This is also called phonetic spelling.

ex. Pumkns have sedz insid. (Pumpkins have seeds inside.)

ex. Pumkns gro on the grnd in sol. (Pumpkins grow on the ground in soil.)

We also exercised our fine motor skills as we tore paper to create our own jack-o-lanterns. The children traced their own oval and cut it out. They also used 2D shapes to create the face for their jack-o-lantern.

In addition, we prepared out little pumpkins for painting tomorrow by giving our pumpkins a “bath”. The children will be painting pumpkins tomorrow morning. 🙂

We are 10 canned goods short of meeting our classroom goal of collecting 100 canned goods. Please help us reach our goal of 100 canned goods to feed people in need.

Tomorrow is the Miller School pumpkin patch. We are SOOOOO excited for this event!

Friday, your child is encouraged to wear black and orange to school! They are allowed to wear a Halloween shirt or headband, but please no costumes. Costumes can be worn at Boo Bash that evening after school.

SURPRISE on Monday!!!- We are inviting parents to come to Kindergarten at 2:00 to join us for math games!

Hello Families!

Today went by so super fast! The children were introduced to the letter Pp. I asked them to bring in a picture or drawing of something that begins with the letter p.

Please remember, we are testing your child on writing not only their first name, but also their last name. The test will be on Friday. Thanks!

Today we practiced sorting objects by shapes. We did this with various shaped erasers.

We also added another word wall word to our math word wall. This word is 2D Shapes. A 2D shapes is a shape that is flat. Examples of 2D shapes are square, circle, triangle, rectangle, rhombus, and trapezoid.

We used 2D shapes to make a fire engine. These were sent home. Please check your child’s folder for these 2D shape creations.

Please remember, we are still collecting canned goods!!! Please help us reach our school goal of 5,000 cans!

Please remember to send in $3.00 and the signed permission slip for the Boo Bash on Friday is you and your chid plan on attending.

We will have a pumpkin patch at Miller School on Thursday afternoon during school hours. The pumpkins are $1.00. The money will go towards the PTA. Please send in the dollar in an envelope labeled pumpkin patch with your child’s name on it. Thanks

For writing today we wrote thank you notes to the firefighters! We used the sentence starter…”Thank you for teaching us…” We learned alot from these brave firefighters.

Here are some of the things we learned:

  1. Have a working smoke detector in the house. Check the batteries routinely and change them twice a year.
  2. Discuss with your family a safe meeting place in case of a fire.
  3. Call 9-1-1 in case of emergency. (This is another super good reason that you should teach your child their address and phone number soon.)
  4. If your clothes catch on fire, STOP, DROP, and ROLL.
  5. If you are in a smoke filled room, stay low.
  6. Never hide from the firefighters if they are in your house.
  7. Look both ways twice before crossing the street. (cross with an adult)
  8. We also talked about trick or treating safety. Ex. Trick or treat in lighted areas with an adult. Never go in strangers’ houses.
  9. Do not touch matches or lighters.
  10. We also learned lots of interesting details about the fire engine!

We read a non-fiction book about fire engines as well. We looked at features of non-fiction books. (Ex. Contents, glossary, index, photos)

Please enjoy these pictures from our day!

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Happy 8th week of kindergarten! Wow! It is the last week of October! We have an exciting week ahead!

Tomorrow, we will enjoy a visit from Dearborn firefighters! We will learn about fire safety as well as what a firefighter does. We are really looking forward to this experience.

We will be using pumpkins for science as well as an activity this week. If you would like to donate $1.00 for your child’s pumpkin we would appreciate it.

On Friday, during the school day, we are asking that the children wear orange and/or black to school rather than a Halloween costume. Please do not send candy to school with your child. If you would like to have your child pass out a Halloween treat, please consider healthy choices or items such as pencils, stickers, etc.

On Friday, AFTER school, from 4:30-6:00 we are having a BOO BASH!!! Please join us for this super fun celebration for the whole family! There will be food, games, treat bags, and music! Your child can wear a costume for this event if they chose to. Costumes are optional. ALL children need to have a parent or adult with them at this event! NO accessories that look like weapons and no clown costumes will be allowed at this event. There was a permission slip sent home for the Boo Bash last week. Please return it me you have not already. I have also begun teaching informational writing to the children. I introduced the circle map as a tool to help us gather our ideas or in thins case facts about apples from the non-fiction book we read about apples. The children and I created this circle map together. Eventually, the children will create their own circle map and use it write informational pieces about a topic. We will continue our informational writing about apples this week.

Here is the anchor chart we made to help us remember what informational writing is as well as tool to use to check to see if our writing follows these guidelines for this genre.
