Hello Kindergarten Families!

Happy 18th week of Kindergarten! We are off to a beautiful start to the new year! This is a short but busy week!

Wednesday, January 18th, is a late start! School will begin at 9:30AM.

Thursday, January 19th, is our first Kindergarten Field Trip! Please remember to pack a lunch for your child on this day! ALL lunches must be packed in a bag that can be thrown away after lunch. Please send a bottle of water for your child to drink. Do not send milk or pop. Children need to dress in comfortable clothing with gym shoes. Please see me if you have any questions or concerns about the field trip. We are very excited for this opportunity to experience more hands on science!

Friday. January 20th is a movie night for all Miller families. This event is sponsored by Miller PTA.  🙂

We will take the NWEA test on Friday!!! Be sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before the test and eats a healthy breakfast. This is a very important test that provides information about your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses.

We hope that each one of our students is able to login and access Clever for awesome learning opportunities with MobyMax and MyON. Please see me if you have questions about Clever. These online tools are great ways to practice for the NWEA as well as strengthen math and literacy skills.

Homework: Be sure to complete the daily homework assignments on the January calendar. If this was misplaced, you can find it on the blog at the top.

Spelling: Here are the words for this week. Please be sure to help your child practice EVERYDAY! The test is on FRIDAY! Your child will be tested on three word family words and three sight words. * I will also give your child a “cold word” to spell. This is a word that follows the pattern of the word family. (an ex. is tan)

  1. fan
  2. pan
  3. ran
  4. is
  5. the
  6. to

Reading: We are practicing many reading strategies. This week we will practice reading strategies using informational books. We will also spend time learning how to blend the beginning sounds with the rime.  We will also practice identifying rhyming words as well as number of syllables in a word. In addition to these strategies, we ask and answer questions about the text. Please practice the following sight words: (These are words your child needs to recognize and read by sight.)

Review: am  so  be                                                           New words: of   has   by

Math: We will review 2D and 3D shapes. We will compare the shapes by looking at their features such as corners and sides. We will also review computation with adding and subtracting objects.  Your child will be tested on counting to 100 this week.

Science: We will review concepts learned about pushes and pulls. We will explore how objects move when pushed or pulled.

Social Studies: We will work on distinguishing between today, tomorrow, and yesterday. We will also discuss ways we can learn about the past.

Writing: This week we will finish our informational writing about penguins and review opinion writing before taking our opinion writing test. Please practice writing by stretching for the sounds, using spaces between words and periods at the end of sentences. I will also be looking for detailed drawings with labels on the drawings that match the student’s writing.

Thank you for all do!!!

Have an amazing week!

Hello Families!

I hope you are enjoying the day off of school!

On Friday, I explained to the children why we are observing this day off of school. We discussed the important and world-changing work on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In honor of his birthday today, I asked the children to complete a special homework assignment. I asked them to do a kind act for someone. After they complete the kind act, please help them write a sentence to tell about the kind act they did.

There will be an event at the Dearborn Center for Performing Arts today at 2:00 to promote peace and kindness. Please see this link for the Unity March. It is for all ages! Unity March

I will blog later with the information of what we are learning and doing this week.

Have a wonderful afternoon!

Thank you for all you do!

Hello Families!

Tomorrow is our first spelling word test. I sent homework home to practice for this test! Please help your child complete this assignment. Thank you!

Today we practiced asking questions using question words. (who, what, where, when, why)

We wrote to answer the question, “Where do penguins live?”. We are creating our own informational books about penguins. The children are also illustrating each fact. Yesterday we wrote to answer, “What do penguins look like?”. Tomorrow we will write to answer “What do penguins eat?”.

Yesterday and today we practiced identifying 2D shapes. Yesterday, we used toothpicks and playdough to create 2d shapes. We then covered our shape and provided clues to our friends to get them to guess the shape we created.

In social studies we discussed ways to learn about the past. The children brainstormed a list of events that happened in the past. (ex. their first birthday, the day mom or dad was born, Boo Bash, the Pilgrims coming to America)

We discussed some ways to learn about the past are by looking at pictures, looking at books, looking up information on the Internet, and talking to older adults.

Please remember there is no school on Monday in observance of
Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Enjoy the pictures!

Thank you for all you do!

Hello Families!

Please check your child’s folder for the math homework I sent home. This is due back to school tomorrow.

I also sent home the January Homework calendar. It is posted on the blog as well.

Please continue to visit Clever to log your child onto the online practice tools. Another fun website is called abcya.com. There are some exceptional math games! Let me know what you and your child think! 🙂

Today we created 2D shapes using toothpicks and playdough! The children created their shape, covered it up and had to use clues to help their friend guess their shape. The children loved it!!! Playdough is always a fun tool to use in learning…and play. 🙂

We also read a book about being responsible. We practiced identifying key details in the book. Please help your child become more responsible at home by giving them a small job to complete.. (ex. making their bed each day, feeding the cat, or helping wash dishes)

Thank you for all you do!

Hello Families!

It was so wonderful to be with my students again! I love to teach Kindergarten…and having your children for students makes it even more enjoyable!

Please check your child’s folder. I sent home the newsletter. The newsletter has our spelling words for this week!

These words are hat, bat, cat, I, see, we, as well as mystery -at family words.

I will reassess the children on counting to 100 next week. Please practice with the each day.

In addition, we will take the NWEA reading test on Jan. 20th. This is next Friday! Please continue to read and practice writing with your child each day. Also, I cannot stress enough the importance of going onto MobyMax. This is such great practice for the NWEA…and more importantly, it is a great tool to help your child strengthen their literacy skills.

Today, we completed a RAN chart about Penguins. Please ask your child to tell you a fact they remember from the non-fiction books we used to complete our RAN chart.

Thank you for all you do!

Hello Families!

Thank you for all of the wonderful gifts that were given to me this week! My favorite gift is the gift of being your child’s teacher!

Here are some of the terrific things that happened this week!

*We graphed our opinions about candy canes!!! It turns out that everyone likes candy canes! 🙂

*We were visited by Santa and Mrs. Claus! He read a story about Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer.

*We completed another math story problem for computation. This story involved drawing reindeer and adding the number of antlers.

*We used the 2D shapes; squares and rectangles to make candy canes!

*We wrote a personal narrative about a time we played in the snow. Our stories had a beginning, middle, and end..as well as a reaction sentence.

*We segmented three letter words and wrote the sounds we heard on our white board paddles.

*We practiced identifying the characters, settting, and problem/solution in narrative stories!

*We explored how objects moved down a ramp and how their shape affects how the object moved. We discussed why round shapes make for better tires. 🙂

*We took a social studies test on needs/wants, and goods/services.

*We had a sing-along on the lobby of the school! This was so delightful!

And…we ended the day on Friday opening presents! I love my students so much and will miss them over the winter break! I wish all of you a restful and fun winter break!

I sent home a homework packet on Friday. I included writing paper for your child to write me a sentence each day over the break. I will be logging into MobyMax to see who is doing their MobyMax practice. 🙂

Please email me with any questions you might have regarding homework. I will check my email over break.

To all who are celebrating Christmas…I wish you a very Merry Christmas!!!!!

Thank you for all you do!!!!
