Hello Families!

Happy 2nd week of school! I am looking forward to a week full of fun and learning! Friday marks the first day of the Fall season!!! We will soon see the beauty of the autumn colors on the trees as their leaves change color. As you take walks with your children feel free to bring in fall colored leaves they find!

There will be no school for Young 5s and Kindergarten on Friday, Sept. 22nd! Teachers will be at a meeting! Thank you!

Reading: This week we will continue to practice the Three Ways to Read a Book. Your child can read a book by: 1. Reading the pictures, 2. Reading the words, 3. Retelling a familiar story. We will also begin Daily 5. This is our Literacy program that teaches the children valuable reading strategies as well as independence during work time. We will practice Read to Self.

Math: We will introduce various math tools to the students this week. In addition, we will work on counting to 30 and recognizing numbers and their quantities 1 to 5. This week we will practice writing the numbers 1-5! We will also begin learning about basic 2D shapes.

Science: We will begin learning about the 5 senses. These are see, hear, smell, taste, touch. You child will also learn what it means to be a scientist.

Social Studies:  We will begin a unit called “How to Get  Along with Others”. This week we will continue to talk about the importance of rules and review what good choices we should be making at school.

Writing: We will learn about what a writer does. We will also learn how to use and care for the writing materials in the classroom. We will begin writing through drawing pictures and telling a friend about the story it depicts.

*Please remember: Your child needs to bring a healthy snack to school EVERYDAY! (ex. fruit, veggies, crackers. NO chips or cookies please!)

Please remember to check and empty out the Oakman folder daily and review the letters in your child’s name as well as practice writing their first name each evening!

The children need to wear gym shoes (shoes that tie or Velcro) EVERYDAY.

Thank you for all you do!!! If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to see me!

Scissors coming home!

Posted on

Hello families!

At the end of the day I will be giving you scissors for your child. Please practice cutting with these scissors at home. The scissors will stay at your house in a safe place. I am also sending home a cutting practice page in their folders.

Today we read “The Three Bears”. We practiced the comprehension strategy called “Retell the story by naming the characters”. They did such a great job naming all four characters in our story. Please ask them to tell you about the story and to name the characters using the project they are bringing home today.

We also practiced writing our names. Please remember, writing the first name and naming the letters within the name is daily homework. Help your child write their name with a pencil or marker. Then try something fun like writing their name in shaving cream…or…using playdough to make the letters in their name.

We also practiced recognizing numbers 1-5 as we used q-tips to dot the numbers!

Thank you for all you do! Have a beautiful weekend!!!

More of what we have been doing..

Hello Families!

We have been working on the Three Ways to Read a Book. (Read the pictures, Read the words, and Retell the story). The children have been practicing reading the pictures. We have also been practicing retelling the story.

We practiced retelling the story with Three Billy Goats Gruff. We listened to the story and sang a song about the story. Then we made stick puppets to help us retell the story at home to our families. If you do not have this book at home, please go to you tube and search for the read aloud of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. There are many to chose from.

Today we read the Three Little Pigs. We practiced retelling the story using pictures! We colored the pictures from the story and glued them in order of the houses that the Big Bad Wolf visited.

In addition to this reading strategy, we practiced identifying numbers 1-5.

We played a number game called Number Stew! The child pulled a number from the pot and told us all the number they got! Then they placed their number on the easel with its match.

And…we practiced using simple 2D shapes to draw people as we created our family portraits. First we practiced on our Magic Boards.

I am looking forward to seeing you all at Open House tonight at 6:00!

Thank you for all you do!

Three Ways to Read a Book

Posted on

Hello Families!

Today we practiced the 3 ways to read a book.

We can…

  1. Read the Pictures
  2. Read the Words
  3. Retell the Story

First we practiced finding the front of the book to know where to begin.

Then we practiced using the illustrations to “read the pictures” as we made up the story. We began with the words, “Once upon a time…”

We also listened a familiar story as I read the words.

After this, we practiced retelling the familiar story together.

Please use a book at home to practice the 3 ways to read a book with your child!

I am also sending home reading bags today. Inside you will find name practice homework to be done daily. I included directions inside the bag too. This should be done for 20 minutes.

The reading bag and its contents comes back to school everyday! 🙂

Please remember Open House is Thursday 6:00 to 7:30 🙂

Thank you for all you do!

Hello families!

Today your child is bringing home our weekly newsletter. Please see me if you have any questions in regards to it.

Please note that Open House will be 6:00-7:30 on Thursday, September 14th. I look forward to seeing the whole family at this event.

Today we read a book called “Bear’s Busy Family”. We talked about the different people we have in our families. We also did a writing piece about what we like. The children worked on drawing what they like and orally dictated using the sentence stem; “I like…..”

We also practiced tracing the letters in our names. This work will also be coming home as homework this week in the reading bags.

Please remember to send in a family picture as well as a healthy snack for your child.

If your child wants to attend breakfast, they are more than welcome to at 8:15 in the cafeteria. This is a free service.

Thank you for all you do! We had an awesome first full day! I am sure your little angels are super tired! 🙂

Monday-Music

Tuesday- Art and Gym

Wednesday-

Thursday- Science Enrichment

Friday- Music and Gym

Last Friday we read “The Little Mouse, The Red Ripe Strawberry, and The Big Hungry Bear” by Audry and Don Wood. In this story the mouse tried so hard to protect the strawberry from the big hungry bear. At the end of the story it is decided that the best way for the big hungry bear not to eat the strawberry is for the little mouse to cut it in half and share it with (the reader; us). So…we practiced cutting out our own red ripe strawberry and then we finger painted the black seeds onto the strawberry. We talked about sharing as well.

Here are a few pictures from this activity as well as a few from our week.

Thank you for all you do!

See you tomorrow!

Parent Meeting Tomorrow!

Hello Families!

We will have a parent meeting in our classroom (room 106) tomorrow at 12:00. I look forward to seeing you all there!

Also, you should be receiving texts from me through Remind. The text will come up with a code rather than an actual phone number. This is another way I will be communicating with you. You can also respond back and it will text me to my phone. 🙂 If you want to reply to the blogs here…you certainly can! Just click on the bottom where it says reply. Your message will go straight to my email for me to read. I check my email regularly.

Thanks for all you do!

Mrs. Mehrhof
