Hello Families!
Enjoy these pictures of the awesome things we have been doing and learning in Young 5s!
We learned about wants. We used the magic boards to draw one thing we want. We shared what we drew by saying… “I want a …..” Wants are things we would like to have.
We practiced identifying the number of sides of 2D shapes. We used toothpicks and playdough balls to construct 2D shapes!
We opened a new inside recess center.. We have a sand table now! Thank you, Mr. Ali for helping us fill our sand table!
Thank you for all you do!

Hello Families! Happy 18th week of Young 5s! I am looking forward to a terrific week with my super star students! Please take the time to check out your child’s January goal on their Mahara site using the QR reader on your phone. The poster is outside of our classroom.
Wednesday is a LATE START! We will begin school at 9:30.

We will learn about polar bears! We will practice the following literacy skills:

Social Studies:  We will continue a unit called “How do we get what we need and want?”. We will discuss what is meant by a want and what we can do to earn and get the things we want. We are also working with a program called Second Step. This program helps us learn about rules, social skills, and how to handle our emotions. We have been focusing on accidents and what to do and say when we accidentally do something.
Writing: We will work on informational writing. We will write facts about polar bears. We will also use a circle map and tree map to organize our facts. Â

Hello Families!
Here are some pictures that tell what about some of the great things we have been doing.
I have reassessed your children in counting and letter identification. You will soon be receiving an individualized progress report to tell you the results and what you can work on at home.
We are playing a math game called “I have… who else has?” We are matching numbers with their quantities.
We are playing a math game called “I have… who else has?” We are matching numbers with their quantities.
Animal Magic came to our school? We learned about tarantulas. These creatures have their skeletons on the outside of their bodies!
We learned about snakes! This is a milk snake. It is not dangerous. But if a snake has red touching yellow… it is dangerous!
We are creating the habitat for our polar bear! We are using glitter and white paint to create the cold Arctic!
We are covering the black skin on our polar bear with white cotton balls! We learned that a polar bear has clear fur that appears white. Underneath the fur is a black skin to help keep the polar bear warm!
We loved dipping the cotton balls in the glue! We reused clean laundry detergent caps for glue cups!
We also were introduced to super e! Here is a video for Super E!
Here is a video to help your child review the short vowel sounds.
Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day! We have no school. Here is a video about the heroic work of Dr. Martin Luther King.
Thank you for all you do!

Hello Families!
It was so great to see all of my students today! I missed them so much! We had a wonderful day together!
We are learning about polar bears! We shared what we think we know about polar bears today. It was interesting to see how many of the children thought they might be brown and white! It is awesome to see them connect what prior knowledge they have about bears in general (most of the bears they know of begin brown). There was even a connection to a narrative story we read before break about a bear who lives in a dark cave! Two of the children said polar bears might live in a “dark cave”. I love these connections being made!
Thank you for reading with your child over the break. I saw the many reading graphs and homework returned to school today! Each minute you spend with your child reading will only benefit them and help them reach their academic goals…. plus…. what an beautiful way to spend quality time together cuddled up reading with one another! 🙂
Today the children have a new weekly graph in their folders as well as new books in their reading bags.
I introduced a new brainbreak song today. It is one that reinforces the short vowel sounds. Learning these short vowel sounds is very critical for your child to decode and blends sounds when reading.
Please remember to send a healthy snack to school with your child in case they do not like the fruit or vegetable in the snack cooler. 🙂
Thank you for all you do!
