Look How We Have Been Learning!

Hello Families!

We had a great week! We had our second field trip as well as more fun learning taking place in Young 5s! I will post pictures of the field trip when I get them all sent to me. I would like to thank Ms. Saba and Mrs. Dakhlallah for taking such good care of the class as they accompanied them on our field trip to the Fox Theater. Sadly, I was very sick at home. I would also like to thank the parents who came on the field trip as well as Mrs. Amgyed who provided a lovely snack and water bottles for the children! Oakman is such an amazing family to be a part of and I am so blessed!

This week we have been learning how to ask and answer questions about informational text. We read texts about healthy food as well as about groundhogs. In addition we learned the sight words, help, am, and come. The children have been practicing rhyming. Please encourage them to identify rhyming words. Reading your child nursery rhymes has so many benefits! Click here for a link that contains some information about the benefits of reading nursery rhymes to your child.

We also have been practicing simple addition and subtraction story problems as we talk about how we know we need to subtract or add.

In our Second Step learning we have been talking about what to do and how to handle when we have accidents. We learned we need to say, “I am sorry. I did not mean to do that. Are you ok?”

In science we have been learning about the sun and how it helps warm the earth and aids in the growth of plants that give us our healthy foods.

Check out some more of what we have been learning and doing with the pictures below. And…. please remember, there is no school for Kindergarten and Youngs 5s on Friday, Feb. 7th.

We listened to the story, “Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution” by Pat Miller, before setting new goals for the new card marking!
We have been building stamina as we work on learning letters and sounds during Daily 5!
We got a new word work this week!
We have been learning about making healthy choices with what we eat!
We have been practicing counting the number of syllables in words as we jump the syllables in words.
We graphed the number of Arctic animals in the picture!
We made groundhog puppets after learning facts about groundhogs!
We used our groundhog puppets in shadow play after talking about our predictions for Groundhog’s Day!
We graphed our opinions! 11 friends predict the groundhog will see his shadow on February 2nd and 5 friends predict the groundhog will not see his shadow. The legend says if the groundhog sees his shadow there will be 6 more weeks of winter. If he does not, spring will come sooner. We will see….February 2nd is Groundhog’s Day!

Thank you for all you do!

Celebrate Fairness, Kindness, and Love! It is Martin Luther King Day!

Hello Families!

Today we remember the world-changing legacy of Martin Luther King! If you have never listened to his I Have a Dream speech, I encourage you to hear it. He believed that everyone, regardless of race, religion, ability, gender….should be treated with fairness! What a great idea! I know we teach our children fairness and love. I can tell by how sweet they are to each other in the classroom. But, on this day, please take some time to share this read aloud with your child. In addition to the kind things you share and do with your children each day, maybe this week we can go the extra mile to spread love and kindness. I know it is a chilly day, and it might be difficult to get out….but remember, we can go the extra mile in showing fairness, kindness, and acceptance each and everyday! However, while we are snuggled in the warmths of our homes, please encourage your child to draw and tell about a way we can be fair to those who are different than us. (Ex. inviting others to play, sharing a treat, helping someone when they are sad or sick…..) I look forward to seeing these tomorrow. Please remember, tomorrow is a half day of school!

Please enjoy this read aloud video with your child by clicking on it!
