Hello Families!
Tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 21, there will be no school in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Dr. King was an amazing activist who used the power of words and kindness to help spread his message of treating others fairly with compassion no matter what the differences may be. Tomorrow, take the opportunity to talk to your children about the impact a kind act can have on someone as well as the meaning of being compassionate. 🙂 You can start the conversation by asking them to draw a picture of someone doing something kind for someone else. We call this being a “Bucket-filler”. At Oakman, we believe that each person, no matter their age or differences, carries an invisible bucket inside their heart. When we do and say kind things, or even share a smile, we can fill someone’s bucket. And….when we fill a bucket of another, we in turn fill our own bucket! We do not want to be bucket-dippers by saying or doing mean and unfair things to someone. However, if we do, it is important to recognize that, apologize, and find a way to fill that person’s bucket back up. I have a book we have read about bucket-filling, “Have you Filled a Bucket Today?” by Y. Bivins. If you would like to borrow this book or any other book about feelings, please let me know. I love to share books with my awesome Oakman families! So, thank you, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and every other person who dared greatly to treat others the way they want to be treated….and live as bucket-fillers!
Tuesday is also a half day of school. Dismissal is at 11:45!
See you all soon!
Thanks for all you do!
