Hello Families!
Happy 31st week of Young 5s!! I am looking forward to another wonderful week of school as we welcome the month of May!! Please be sure your child sends in the money and the permission slip for the field trip to the farm by Friday! I would like for each child to bring an adult for this trip so please make plans on attending with us!
Please help the 5th Grade raise money for their 5th grade promotion by going to Yogurtopia on Schaefer Rd. this Saturday between 11 and 9PM. Just mention Oakman School when you place your order! I know they will appreciate your support!
Reading: This week we will continue to practice the Three Ways to Read a Book as well as we practice asking and answering questions in informational texts. We will also practice comparing two different texts on the same topic: butterflies. We will practice the following literacy skills:
- Identifying letters and their sounds.
- Identifying s- blends at the beginning of words. (ex. st as in star and sl as in sleep)
- Producing pairs of rhyming words. (ex. dish/wish)
- Identifying plurals; more than one. (ex. dog/dogs, bush/bushes)
- Reading emergent level texts and knowing where to begin reading on the page.
- Blending the beginning sound with the rime in words from the -ad family. (ex. had, mad)
- Stretching for the sounds in three letter words and identifying the letter that makes the sounds in the beginning, middle, and end of the word..
- Identifying the sight words (yes) and (no). (review)
- Counting syllables in words.
Please review: All upper and lowercase letters and practice writing them! Please review the following sight words: a, the, see, to, like, my, you, I, it, in, said, for, am, make, here, can, is, up, do, big, little, yes, have, jump, she, did, he, red, so, not, go, green, will, him, down, find, good, please, come, one, two, has
Math: We will work on counting to 100 and recognizing/writing numbers and their quantities 1 to 20. We will begin a new math unit on addition and subtraction to 10!!! Please encourage your child to count, show the quantity to match numbers, and talk about addition and subtraction stories with objects.
Science: We will continue our science unit about Ecosystems. We will continue to discuss what living and non-living mean as we identify what makes something living. This week we are will talk about animal habitats.
Social Studies: We will continue a unit called “Where am I”. We will review position words such as up, down in, out, beside, in between. We are also working with a program called Second Step. This program helps us learn about rules, social skills, and how to handle our emotions. This week we will practice how to invite friends to play with us. We practiced identifying the feeling, talking about it, and taking belly breaths.
Writing: We will focus on Informational writing. We will write about insects and butterflies! We will write as we identify facts on these topics. Please help your child to practice writing at home each day!
Homework Everyday:
- Count to 100 by 1’s and 10’s. Write numbers 1-10.
- Use objects at home to practice hands on addition and subtraction up to 10.
- Read books for 15 minutes!
- Write sight words in shaving cream or sand with parent supervision
- Practice letter formation
- Make and play a memory match game with sight words in cards.
- Play one math game and one ABC game on ABCya.com.
