Valentine’s Week!!!

Hello Families! Happy 22nd week of Young 5s! I am looking forward to another wonderful week with my little Valentines!

We will have a Valentine’s Party in the afternoon on Wednesday!! The children are welcomed to bring 13 valentine cards/treats for their friends. Please be sure they write their name on each valentine. 🙂Please see me if you are able to help during our party!!! We are going to have a fun time!

Please remember there will be no school next week! Enjoy the Mid-Winter Break!

Reading: This week we will continue to practice the Three Ways to Read a Book as well as identifying question words as we ask questions about informational text on feelings and how to get along with others!. We will practice the following literacy skills:

  • Identifying letters and their sounds while writing the letters.
  • Producing pairs of rhyming words. (ex. frog/log)
  • Reading emergent level texts and knowing where to begin reading on the page.
  • Blending the beginning sound with the rime in words from the -et family. (ex. pet, get, met)
  • Stretching for the sounds in three letter words and identifying the letter that makes the sound.
  • Identifying the sight words (so) and (red).

Please review: All upper and lowercase letters! Please review the following sight words: a, the, see, to, like, my, you, I, it, in, said, for, am, make, here, can, is, up, do, big, little, yes, have, jump, she, did, he

Math: We will work on counting to 100 and recognizing/writing numbers and their quantities 1 to 20. We will compare numbers up to 10. We will also practice finding the sums for addition problems up to 5. We will also begin learning about subtraction. We will also practice sorting items by color.

Science: We will continue to talk about the different types of weather, (rainy, snowy, sunny, partly cloudy, and cloudy) We will record the day’s weather on our weather graphs. In addition, we will identify characteristics of hazardous types of weather. (ex. tornados)

Social Studies:  We will continue a unit called “Who am I?”. We will talk about ways we measure time in terms of yesterday, today, and tomorrow. We are also working with a program called Second Step. This program helps us learn about rules, social skills, and how to handle our emotions. We have been focusing on what to do when we have a strong feeling. We practiced identifying the feeling, talking about it, and taking belly breaths.

Writing: We will work on informational writing using digital tools such as the Internet. We will use a graphic organizer as we write about today, yesterday, and tomorrow.

Homework Everyday:

  • Count to 100 by 1’s and 10’s. Write numbers 1-10.
  • Use the deck of cards I sent home to use two at a time to compare the numbers and identify which is greater (more). This is called “Top-It”.
  • Read books for 15 minutes!
  • Draw a picture and label the drawing
