Last week of November

Hello Families!

Happy 13th week of Young Fives! I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving Break! I am looking forward to a new week of school and finishing the month of November!

This week your child will bring home a paper letter. This is a family project for you and your child to decorate! Please feel free to be as creative as you would like. These letters will be decorations for our winter Chicka Chick Boom Boom Tree! Have fun!!!

Here is a telling of the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom story, by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Archambault

Please remember to send your child with hats and gloves each day to school. The weather is cold and we do go outside. It is very helpful if you can write your child’s name on these items as well. Thank you!!!!

Reading: This week we will continue to practice the Three Ways to Read a Book as well as identifying the components of  narrative literature!  We are up to 11 minutes of stamina where we are working independently on our Daily 5 choice!!! This week we will practice counting the number of syllables and having fun with rhyming words. In addition, we will practice identifying the ending sounds in words. A newer skill that we have been practicing is taking three sounds and blending them together to make words. So, if I had the sounds, m-u-g… I would blend it to read and say mug. This is one of those emergent reading skills that I talked with many of you about at conferences.

*This week, if you are out and about, please pick up magnetic letters to practice letter identification as well as the skill of blending three sounds together, (keeping in mind, the middle letter needs to be a vowel; a, e, i, o, u)

We will learn the letters Ll, Ww, and review Uu. We will also review the sight word look. Please practice writing these letters at home. Below is an example of how to write the letters. Please review the letters in their name as well as the letters Mm, Dd, Gg, Aa,Nn, Ii, Ss, Hh, Oo, Ff, Vv, and, Zz, Pp, Tt, Rr. Please review: a, the, see, to, like, my, you, I,it, in, said, for, am.

Math: We will work on counting to 100 and recognizing/writing numbers and their quantities 1 to 12. We will also be introduced to the concept of addition using concrete objects. (ex. I have 2 bears and I add 2 more, how many will I have.)

Science: We will continue learning about the 5 senses as we investigate claims we make about the world around us. We will talk about the different types of weather, (rainy, snowy, sunny, partly cloudy, and cloudy) We will begin graphing the day’s weather in December.

Social Studies:  We will continue a unit called “How do we get what we need and want?”. We will continue to look at what are the things we need and how do we get what we need. We are also working with a program called Second Step. This program helps us learn about rules, social skills, and how to handle our emotions.

Writing: We will work on Opinion Writing! We will will draw, write, and dictate about how we think or what we feel about a topic. ( ex. My favorite animal is……)

Thank you for all you do! Mrs. Mehrhof
