Hello Families!
We had such a wonderful week last week! I am looking forward to another super week with my super duper students!
Tomorrow we will have a PTA/Parent Technology meeting at 2:00PM. These technology meetings are so beneficial to those who attend. I hope all of you can make it!
And….tomorrow, at 9:00-10:00 you are all invited to Miller Open House!!! Please visit our classroom to see your awesome little readers during Daily 5! We are so excited to showcase the superb learning that is happening in our classrooms!
We are also involved in a school-wide sock drive! Rudy Washington, an amazing 13 year old boy, visited our school to talk about Anti-Bullying concepts! This kid is truly one of a kind! Not only, is he one of the most well-spoken inspirational speakers I have ever heard, he is a singer, a drummer, a pianist, a song writer, a great student, and humanitarian! A few years ago he started a mission to collect socks for homeless people. He and his parents visit the streets of Detroit to pass out love and socks to those in need! Amazing!!! All of us at Miller School would like to Rudy, (also known as Sock Man), with this mission. If you can, please send a new pair of socks with your child to school. Any size and any color will be appreciated!
This is also March is Reading Month! Please see me if you would like to sign up to read to our class!!! We have books in both English and Arabic to chose from! You can also bring in your own book.
We are also doing a school-wide contest on myOn! I am asking that ALL of my students visit myOn as part of their DAILY homework and read 5-8 books each DAY.This would equal out to about 20 minutes of reading! So… the goal is 100 books read by the end of the month for EVERY student in our class!! I will be monitoring this site to see who is participating and how often! I will have prizes for the children who reach the goal of 100 books read by March 31st!!! I am also encouraging all of the students and their families to visit the Dearborn Centennial Library! This is truly one of the best libraries I have been too! The children’s area is simply wonderful…with lots of terrific books and activities!
We are in need of Baby Wipes and tissues! We would really appreciate it if you could donate these items to my classroom.
Here are some pictures from last week!
Highlights from last week: We have water snails! We are learning about living things and what living things need. We are studying the snails and making daily observations as little scientists. We have also finished writing our own narratives in the form of a fairy tale inspired by “The Three Little Pigs. These stories turned out so incredibly cute! The children strengthened their stories with detailed illustrations with talking bubbles coming from the characters! The children also helped me as we used the computer to publish their stories! In addition to these highlights, we have been practicing showing ways to compose and decompose the number 10. Last week your child brought home the Making 10 Rainbow. This shows all 11 ways to make the number 10! We also compared the experiences of the two characters from similar stories! We read “Caps for Sale” by Esphyr Slobodkina. We listened on YouTube to the story “The Hatseller and the Monkeys” by Baba Wague Diakite. This is a West African Folktale. We used a bubble map to compare the experiences between the peddler and the hatseller. The children did a great job! Please feel free to look these stories up on YouTube or at the local library! You’re child will love to re-tell these stories with you!
Well, part 2 will come tomorrow morning! I am looking forward to seeing you all tomorrow at 9:00! Happy reading this week!!!
