Week of Jan. 23

Hello Kindergarten Families! Happy 19th week of Kindergarten!

There will be a parent meeting for PTA today at 2:00! We would appreciate it if you could attend! Thank you!

Friday, January 27th is a half day of school! Dismissal will be at 11:45.

Kindergarten students will begin testing this week on the NWEA!!!

We are taking the NWEA reading test tomorrow morning!

Be sure your child gets plenty of rest the night before the test and eats a healthy breakfast. This is a very important test that provides information about your child’s academic strengths and weaknesses.

We hope that each one of our students is able to login and access Clever for awesome learning opportunities with MobyMax and MyON. Please see me if you have questions about Clever. These online tools are great ways to practice for the NWEA as well as strengthen math and literacy skills.

Homework: Be sure to complete the daily homework assignments on the January calendar.

Spelling: Here are the words for this week. Please be sure to help your child practice EVERYDAY! The test is on FRIDAY! Your child will be tested on three word family words and three sight words. * We will also give your child a “cold word” to spell. This is a word that follows the pattern of the word family. (an ex. is pet)

  1. get
  2. jet
  3. wet
  4. like
  5. my
  6. no

Reading: We are practicing many reading strategies. This week we will practice reading strategies using informational books. We will also spend time learning how to blend the beginning sounds with the rime.  We will also practice identifying rhyming words as well as number of syllables in a word. In addition to these strategies, we ask and answer questions about the text. Please practice the following sight words: (These are words your child needs to recognize and read by sight.)

Review: am  so  be                                                              New words: of   has   by

Math: We will review 2D and 3D shapes. We will compare the shapes by looking at their features such as corners and sides. We will also review computation with adding and subtracting objects. We will construct 3D shapes using building materials.

Science: We will review concepts learned about pushes and pulls. We will explore how objects move when pushed or pulled. We will re-visit the concepts involving shape and an object’s movement.

Social Studies: We will discuss ways to be responsible at school and the importance of rules and expectations.

Writing: This week we will practice opinion writing. We will write our opinions to tell how we think or feel about a topic. Please write a sentence with your child each day. This week, help them write about such topics as, their favorite toy, favorite food, favorite thing to do in the winter,…..)

Thank you for all you do!

I will post pics from the field trip soon!
