Week of January 16th

Hello Families! Happy 18th week of Young 5s! I am looking forward to a terrific week with my super star students! Please take the time to check out your child’s January goal on their Mahara site using the QR reader on your phone. The poster is outside of our classroom.

Wednesday is a LATE START! We will begin school at 9:30.

Friday is a name writing test for your child. I will test them on writing their first and last names. Please practice everyday at home!

Reading: This week we will continue to practice the Three Ways to Read a Book as well as identifying main idea/topic and key details of informational texts as we learn the importance of asking questions to learn more about the topic. We will learn about polar bears! We will practice the following literacy skills:

  • Identifying letters and their sounds while writing the letters.
  • Producing pairs of rhyming words. (ex. frog/log)
  • long vowel i sound in words that end with super e. (ex. like, mile)
  • Reading emergent level texts and knowing where to begin reading on the page.
  • Stretching for the sounds in three letter words and identifying the letter that makes the sound.
  • Identifying the sight words little and big.

Please review: All upper and lowercase letters! Please review the following sight words: a, the, see, to, like, my, you, I, it, in, said, for, am, make, here, can, is, up, do

Math: We will work on counting to 100 and recognizing/writing numbers and their quantities 1 to 20. We will continue to learn more about 2D shapes and their characteristics such as number of sides.!

Science: We will talk about the different types of weather, (rainy, snowy, sunny, partly cloudy, and cloudy) We will record the day’s weather on our weather graphs. In addition, we will identify characteristics of hazardous types of weather. (ex. blizzards and floods)

Social Studies:  We will continue a unit called “How do we get what we need and want?”. We will discuss what is meant by a want and what we can do to earn and get the things we want. We are also working with a program called Second Step. This program helps us learn about rules, social skills, and how to handle our emotions. We have been focusing on accidents and what to do and say when we accidentally do something.

Writing: We will work on informational writing. We will write facts about polar bears. We will also use a circle map and tree map to organize our facts.  

Homework Everyday:

  • Count to 100 by 1’s and 10’s. Write numbers 1-10.
  • Read books for 15 minutes!
  • Write first name and last name
