Hello Families!
Happy 16th week of Young Fives! This is our last week of school for the year 2017! I have enjoyed seeing all of the growth and accomplishments your children have been making! I pray 2018 to be full of more amazing accomplishments and lots of lots of laughter, love, and learning!
Wednesday, Dec. 20th is a Late Start! We will begin school at 9:30.
This is our last week for our Sock Drive. Please consider donating children’s and adults’ new socks for the homeless. The collection will go on until December 22nd. Our class goal is to collect 30 pairs of new socks!!!! We have 15 pairs of new socks so far!!!
Reading: This week we will continue to practice the Three Ways to Read a Book as well as identifying main idea and key details of informational texts. We will learn about reindeer! We will still revisit some of the components of narrative literature as I read some of my favorite holiday stories! This week we will continue to practice counting the number of syllables and having fun with rhyming words. We will continue practicing taking three sounds and blending them together to make words. So, if I had the sounds, m-u-g… I would blend it to read and say mug. This is one of those emergent reading skills that I talked with many of you about at conferences. I will also begin to introduce long vowels. We will begin with long a like in ape and cane.We will learn the letter Xx. We will also learn the sight words up and make. Please practice writing these letters at home. Below is an example of how to write the letters. Please review: All upper and lowercase letters! Please review the following sight words: a, the, see, to, like, my, you, I, it, in, said, for, am, look, here, can, is
Math: We will work on counting to 100 and recognizing/writing numbers and their quantities 1 to 12. We will also continue to practice addition using concrete objects. (ex. I have 2 bears and I add 2 more, how many will I have.) We will also begin learning more about 2D shapes!
Science: We will talk about the different types of weather, (rainy, snowy, sunny, partly cloudy, and cloudy) We will sort warm weather and cold weather clothing.
Social Studies: We will continue a unit called “How do we get what we need and want?”. We will discuss what is meant by a want and what we can do to earn and get the things we want. We are also working with a program called Second Step. This program helps us learn about rules, social skills, and how to handle our emotions.
Writing: We will work on informational writing. We will write facts about reindeer. I will also introduce the children to the RAN chart. This is a chart to help children read and analyze non fiction text. We will also use the internet to research information about reindeer!
*Please continue to read with your child over the Winter Break! On Friday, your child will bring home the reading graphs, more books, a new math game with a dice, and a small packet to review. Please have fun working with your child! Please take the time to help your child visit starfall.com and ABCya.com (Pre-K and K). These are great websites that offer educational and fun games!
Thank you for all you do! I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Blessed 2018 New Year!
