Hello Families! Happy 14th week of Young Fives! This is our first full week of December! The weather will be taking a chilly turn! Please label your child’s hats and gloves.
Please send in your child’s permission slip to attend the field trip to Sesame Street Live along with the money for your child as well as any adults who might be attending. I can take two adults on the bus with me. Any other adults will have to follow the bus in a car and pay for parking at the Fox Theater.
We will also be starting a Sock Drive this week. Please consider donating children’s and adults’ new socks for the homeless. The collection will go on until December 22nd.
Reading: This week we will continue to practice the Three Ways to Read a Book as well as identifying the components of narrative literature! We are up to 11 minutes of stamina where we are working independently on our Daily 5 choice!!! This week we will continue to practice counting the number of syllables and having fun with rhyming words. In addition, we will practice identifying the ending sounds in words. We will continue practicing taking three sounds and blending them together to make words. So, if I had the sounds, m-u-g… I would blend it to read and say mug. This is one of those emergent reading skills that I talked with many of you about at conferences.
We will learn the letters Jj and Yy. We will also learn the sight words here and can. Please practice writing these letters at home. Below is an example of how to write the letters. Please review the letters in their name as well as the letters Mm, Dd, Gg, Aa,Nn, Ii, Ss, Hh, Oo, Ff, Vv, and, Zz, Pp, Tt, Rr, Uu, Ll, Ww. Please review: a, the, see, to, like, my, you, I,it, in, said, for, am, look.
Math: We will work on counting to 100 and recognizing/writing numbers and their quantities 1 to 12. We will also continue to practice addition using concrete objects. (ex. I have 2 bears and I add 2 more, how many will I have.)
Science: We will continue learning about the 5 senses as we investigate claims we make about the world around us. We will talk about the different types of weather, (rainy, snowy, sunny, partly cloudy, and cloudy) We will begin graphing the day’s weather in December.
Social Studies: We will continue a unit called “How do we get what we need and want?”. We will continue to look at what are the things we need and how do we get what we need. We are also working with a program called Second Step. This program helps us learn about rules, social skills, and how to handle our emotions.
Writing: We will work on Opinion Writing! We will will draw, write, and dictate about how we think or what we feel about a topic. ( ex. My favorite animal is……)
Thank you for all you do! Mrs. Mehrhof
