Week of Halloween!!!

Hello Families! Happy 9th week of Young Fives!

I am looking forward to another amazing week of learning in laughter at Oakman School! 🙂

Tuesday, Oct. 31st is Halloween! If your child is wearing a costume on this day, they should come to school with their costumes already on and a warm coat! They MUST wear gym shoes!!! They ARE NOT allowed to bring accessories for their costumes or masks. Please feel free to send a candy bag or container for the trunk or treating. If you are participating in the trunk or treat at 1:30, please let the office know so you can sign up ASAP!

If you are coming to our in-class fall party, PLEASE remember, NO OTHER CHILDREN/BABIES. Our party is from 10:00-11:00 AM. Please let me know if you are coming ASAP. Thank you!!!

Reading: This week we will continue to practice the Three Ways to Read a Book as well as identifying the components of informational books as well as understanding how to tell/write about our opinion.  Your child can read a book by: 1. Reading the pictures, 2. Reading the words, 3. Retelling a familiar story. We will continue to build independence during Daily 5. We will practice Read to Self and Work on Writing, and Word Work!  We are up to 9 minutes of stamina where we are working independently on our Daily 5 choice!!! This week we will practice counting the number of syllables. We will also begin segmenting c-v-c words and and blending the sounds together. (ex. cat/ c-a-t/cat)We will learn the letters Ff, and Vv and the sight words in, and it. Please practice writing these letters at home. Below is an example of how to write the letters. Please review the letters in their name as well as the letters Mm, Dd, Gg, Aa,Nn, Ii, Ss, Hh, Oo, and Tt. Please review: a, the, see, to, like, my, you , I.

Math: We will work on counting to 100 and recognizing numbers and their quantities 1 to 10. This week we will practice writing the numbers 1-6 using dice! We will focus on representing numbers and quantities with a 10 frame. We will also talk about basic 2D shapes. We will also practice graphing data!

Science: We will continue learning about the 5 senses as we begin to look at the forces of Push and pull. These are see, hear, smell, taste, touch. We are also investigating claims about sink and float with our book buddies!

Social Studies:  We will continue a unit called “How to Get  Along with Others”. This week we will continue to learn what it means to be fair when making group decisions. Please continue to help your child with this concept of being responsible at home. We will continuously review what it means to be responsible at school and at home. (ex. help wash dishes, help feed the pet, help set the table, help make their bed, help pack their healthy afternoon snack.)

We are also working with a program called Second Step. This program helps us learn about rules, social skills, and how to handle our emotions.

Writing: We will work on Opinion Writing! We will will draw, write, and dictate our opinions on different topics. (ex. I like ____ because_____.) Please continue practicing drawing people and pictures with your child. This helps them feel more confident when they are writing at school.
