Week of 3/20/17

Hello Kindergarten Families! Happy 26th week of Kindergarten!

We will welcome in the season of Spring this week! I love Spring! The flowers will soon be in bloom, we will see leaves on the trees, and hopefully….no more snow! (at least until next winter!) 🙂 We are still in March is Reading Month! Reading with your child, to your child, or even listening to reading on CDs or the computer is such a beautiful way to spend time together as a family! Some of my most favorite memories of Ryan when he was little, was reading him story after story at bedtime! Enjoy your little ones and their favorite storybooks! Take the opportunity to visit the Dearborn Centennial Library too! Their children’s program is amazing and free!

This week is the last week of the 3rd card marking! I cannot believe how fast this year is going by! Please help your child login to Clever to access MyOn. Here they have so many online books to choose from for reading. Many of the books are read aloud to them as they follow along! This is a super awesome resource to get your child reading more books. We are having a contest to see which class has the most minutes spent at home on MyOn! Please help your child’s class be one of the winners!

Join us for Bingo for Books on Thursday, March 23rd starting at 5:00 and ending at 6:00! We always have a great time at this event.

Friday, March 24th is Pajama Day! Every Friday in March will feature something fun or silly your child can wear to school.

Homework: Be sure to complete the daily homework assignments on the February calendar. If this was misplaced, you can find it on your teacher’s blog.

Spelling: Here are the words for this week. Please be sure to help your child practice EVERYDAY! The test is on FRIDAY! Your child will be tested on three word family words and three sight words. * We will also give your child a “cold word” to spell. This is a word that follows the pattern of the word family. (an ex. is rot)

  1. hot
  2. got
  3. not
  4. jump
  5. for
  6. she

Reading: We are practicing many reading strategies. This week we will practice narrative reading strategies using books and poems. We will also practice flipping the vowel sound with “super e”. (ex. kite, hope) In addition, we will also practice retelling stories using characters, setting, and sequencing. Please practice the following sight words: (These are words your child needs to recognize and read by sight.)

Review: help   her   girl                                               New words: went   want   good

Math: We will continue to practice composing numbers less than and equal to 10 in more than one way. (ex. 7=3+4, 2+5=7, 1+6=7) We will also be assessing the children in counting, number, recognition, and addition/subtraction.

Science: We will continue a unit about living and non-living things. We will continue to distinguish between what is living and what is non-living. We are currently studying snails and fish!

Social Studies: We will continue to practice using position words. We will also practice identifying places in our environment as well as describing them. (ex. I see tables, books, and the gathering place rug. Where am I?)

Writing: This week we will practice opinion writing. We will practice adding details to our writing as well as our illustrations. We will write our opinions about our favorite color and provide reasons why we like that color!  Please practice stretching for the sounds and using finger spaces between words with your child each day for homework. These writing skills are very important for moving into first grade.

We are in need of baby wipes, hand soap, and tissues! Any donations would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you for all you do!

A "leprechaun" visited our classroom and left shamrock rhyming clues around the school because he hid our pointer. We went on a hunt to find it!

The "leprechaun" left gold around our room. He even stepped in green paint and lost his shoe and his hat in our room! I think he spent some time playing the drums too!
