Week of Feb. 13th

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Happy 22nd week of Kindergarten! This week we will celebrate the 100th Day of Kindergarten and Valentine’s Day!

I hope that each one of our students is able to login and access Clever for awesome learning opportunities with MobyMax and MyON. Please see me if you have questions about Clever. These online tools are great ways to practice for the NWEA as well as strengthen math and literacy skills.

Tuesday, February 14th is both our 100th Day of School Celebration as well as Valentine’s Day! Your child can come to school dressed like they are 100 years old. They can also bring Valentines to pass to their friends. Please be sure there are enough Valentine cards/treats for at least 27 children.  All treats need to be individually wrapped so they can be sent home. Thank you!

Wednesday, February 15, is a late start. School will begin at 9:30.

Homework: Be sure to complete the daily homework assignments on the February calendar. If this was misplaced, you can find it on your teacher’s blog.

Spelling: Here are the words for this week. Please be sure to help your child practice EVERYDAY! The test is on FRIDAY! Your child will be tested on three word family words and three sight words. * We will also give your child a “cold word” to spell. This is a word that follows the pattern of the word family. (an ex. is bun)

  1. fun
  2. sun
  3. run
  4. and
  5. up
  6. here

Reading: We are practicing many reading strategies. This week we will practice reading strategies using informational books. We will identify when we do not know a word. We will practice asking questions to gain understanding of this unknown word.  We will also spend time learning how to blend the beginning sounds with the rime.  We will also practice identifying rhyming words as well as number of syllables in a word. We will also practice identifying opposites. (up/down, in/out, off, on) Please practice the following sight words: (These are words your child needs to recognize and read by sight.)

Review: his   had   but                                                          New words: him   boy   dog

Math: We will continue to practice computation solving addition and subtraction word problems. Please practice simple addition and subtraction problems with your child at home. (ex. I have 8 green beans. I ate 5 green beans. How many green beans do I have left?  8-5=3 green beans)

Science: We will continue a unit about living and non-living things. We will continue to distinguish between what is living and what is non-living.

Social Studies: We will learn about maps and globes and how they are used to represent places. We will be sending home a family project over mid-winter break for you and your child to create a map of their bedroom. We will supply the paper.

Writing: This week we will review informational writing. We will work on writing about a topic and naming 2-3 facts about the topic. Please practice stretching for the sounds and using finger spaces between words with your child each day for homework. These writing skills are very important for moving into first grade.

Thank you for all you do!
