Week of Oct. 24th

Hello Kindergarten Families!

Happy 8th week of kindergarten! Wow! It is the last week of October! We have an exciting week ahead!

Tomorrow, we will enjoy a visit from Dearborn firefighters! We will learn about fire safety as well as what a firefighter does. We are really looking forward to this experience.

We will be using pumpkins for science as well as an activity this week. If you would like to donate $1.00 for your child’s pumpkin we would appreciate it.

On Friday, during the school day, we are asking that the children wear orange and/or black to school rather than a Halloween costume. Please do not send candy to school with your child. If you would like to have your child pass out a Halloween treat, please consider healthy choices or items such as pencils, stickers, etc.

On Friday, AFTER school, from 4:30-6:00 we are having a BOO BASH!!! Please join us for this super fun celebration for the whole family! There will be food, games, treat bags, and music! Your child can wear a costume for this event if they chose to. Costumes are optional. ALL children need to have a parent or adult with them at this event! NO accessories that look like weapons and no clown costumes will be allowed at this event. There was a permission slip sent home for the Boo Bash last week. Please return it me you have not already. The cost of this event is $3.00.

Please help us help the people in our community who are in need this season by bringing in canned goods! We will be collecting canned goods for the next two weeks! Our school goal is to collect 5, 000 cans! October 31st is the last day to bring in canned goods.

Homework: Practice letters, books, and sight words in your child’s reading bags. Write first name and last name, count to 100, write numbers 1-20.

Spelling: Please help your child practice writing the following letter this week: Cc and Vv.  In addition, please help your child practice writing his/her first name. *The test will be on Friday!

  2. g
  3. P
  4. p
  5. Your child’s first name and last name. Please be sure there are no backwards letters and that only the first letter in each part of the name is uppercase. The rest of the names should be lowercase. Recognizing and writing names are very important and will be practiced every day!

Reading: This week we will continue our first unit on informational reading. We will learn the differences between a fiction and non-fiction book. We will work on building our comprehension skills by identifying the main topic of an informational book. The children will also begin working on blending sounds to read a word. (ex. b-a-t blended reads bat) We are still practicing our independent Daily 5 time with Read to Self, Work on Writing, and Word Work. Please encourage your child to read their sight words and books from their reading bags each day! Please practice the following sight words: (These are words your child needs to recognize and read by sight.)

Review: here  in  look                       NEW words this week will be: have   you   me

Math: We will continue to practice recognizing and writing numbers 0-20 as well as representing the quantity the number represents. We will also continue to practice counting to 100 by 1’s and 10’s.

Science: We will continue learning about the 5 senses. We will conduct our next science investigation this week using the 5 senses as well as the scientific process of investigating a question with a hypothesis and using data to determine the results. We will focus on investigations with pumpkins!

Social Studies:  We will finish a unit called “How to Get Along with Others”. Your child will be tested on the concepts learned such as fairness, how to solve a problem, and how to make good choices that show we are responsible.

Writing: We will continue our first informational writing unit. This week the children will learn that informational writing is factual writing about a topic. In kindergarten, at this time of the year, I expect the children to use their drawing oral dictation to tell one fact about the topic we are writing about. The children will learn the concept of what is a fact.

Thank you for all you do!

Have an awesome week!
