Teacher created pumpkins will be raffled off on Thursday. Your child can buy raffle tickets for $1 tomorrow and Wednesday. (They can also get 6 raffle tickets for $5) If your child wins a pumpkin on Thursday you will be contacted in case they need help getting it home. 🙂

Also- I forgot to add that our classroom Halloween party begins at 12:30 on Thursday with lunch and activities. It will go until the parade at 1:45. You are welcome to attend both the party and the parade.

Week Of October 27th

Good evening! I hope you have a good weekend. I’m sure your kids had a great time if they attended the Halloween Bash at Howard on Friday. A huge WOW goes out to all the parents that worked so hard to put it together. The decorations were amazing! (A lot of those parents are from our very own class 🙂

Just a reminder that this week there is a half day of school on Friday. Teachers will be marking report cards on that day. Students will go home at 11:45. Report cards will be given to your child at parent/teacher conferences along with NWEA reports. On that note, conference reminders will go home this week. Conferences are scheduled for the evenings of November 7th, 12th and 14th. If you have not signed up for a conference yet, please email me and I will tell you the available times. If you just forgot your day, not to worry, you will get a reminder this week.

Our classroom Halloween party will be Thursday. We will have a lunch party before the parade. Your child will NOT have to bring a lunch on that day. Pizza and other finger foods will be provided. After the party your child will participate in the Howard School parade outside on the track at 1:45. You are welcome to attend both events! Costumes must be sent to school in a bag and put on at lunchtime. Please make sure your child wears his/her regular clothes to school that morning.

Here is what our academic week looks like:

Science: We are starting a quick unit on the force of magnets.

Social Studies: We are wrapping up geography of Michigan and starting history of Michigan

Math: We are beginning Topic B which is capacity (milliliters and liters)

Writing: We are writing our second opinion piece and learning about compound sentences and run-on sentences.

Spelling: We will NOT have a spelling test this week.

Reading: All groups are up and running and you should be seeing the chapter books and comprehension work coming home periodically.

Parents, I am uploading the parent tip sheet for Topic A Module 2 (your child’s newest topic) It is important that your child is proficient telling time on an ANALOG clock for success in this unit. Please read the tip sheet 🙂

I am also scanning multiplication/division fact family cards. If you would like additional practice for your child, simply print, cut and use 🙂

Week Of October 14th

I’ve been wanting to shares these pictures for a few weeks, but they changed the format of our blogs and I’ve been trying to relearn how to post pictures LOL! I think I have it figured out!

Pinwheels for Peace 🙂
I must share Owen’s shirt with you! I love it! HOMES 🙂

This week we will have our Module 1 Assessment in Math. The review went home on Thursday with your child.

We also will have Fall School Pictures on Friday of this week. 🙂 If you did not get a picture form last week, please let me know and I will send another one home with your child.

A note from our room moms concerning Halloween will be coming home on Monday.

Our spelling list this week will be a list of words that I have noticed many students in our class frequently spelling incorrectly. I will make sure your child gets continued practice with these words until they are spelled correctly, as these words should be mastered by 3rd grade. Any practice you can give them at home will be beneficial as well. Remember, they can find these words on Spelling City under the heading Words For Mastery. I am attaching your child’s pre-test his/her list so that you can see which words are giving your child trouble.

Mrs. Hamka shared a link with me that I would like to share with you.

“Last week I received a flyer from a teacher about a cause they are working towards. As many may recall there was a young girl who passed away last year at one of the elementary schools. The school is working on creating a bench/seat in her memory. In order to make this happen they are asking for the following items to be collected (all listed in the flyer)”

It would be a beautiful thing if our Howard School family could assist with this cause. Please take a moment to read the attached flyer.

Just a Quick Update

I just wanted to remind you that this Friday is a half day of school. Children will be dismissed at 11:45. Also on Friday, we will have the Geography quiz on the location of the Great Lakes and the Great Lakes States. Your child does NOT know how to spell each state or lake, however, capitalization will count. We will also have a spelling test on Friday.

On Monday of next week we will have our big Module 1 Math test. The test will cover all of the material that was taught in Module 1. A review will be going home today and should be kept at home. There is a small portion of the review that will need to be completed at home, but I do not want the review returned to me. The majority of the review will be done in class with me. 🙂

Friday and Monday

I will be out of school on Friday October 4th and Monday October 7th unexpectedly for care of family. Please be assured that your children are in good hands! Mrs. Ventura will be subbing in our classroom in my absence. I have left her very thorough plans and she is an EXCELLENT teacher. If you need to reach me, please feel free to email me.

ZEARN MATH

Zearn.org gives your child a chance o practice the Eureka Math concepts they are learning in class. The rights to the website have been purchased by Howard for your child to use this year for free 🙂 Your child is currently on Module 1 Lesson 18 in class. Therefore, your child’s homework for this weekend is to get caught up to and through Lesson 18. You can check your child’s progress by having them log in to the program at home. The logins are in the front of the planner. Practicing with ZEARN and being caught up to our current lesson will be a VERY beneficial review for the test. 🙂

If your child is already caught up to Lesson 18, please try to have them go on Xtramath this weekend for multiplication practice.

The module 1 Unit Test in math will be after Lesson 21.

Any questions of concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Homework Grades

Posted on

Parents,

As a 3rd Grade staff, we decided that all homework will be given the following grades:

5 points for putting your best effort into the homework and doing it neatly even if all answers are not correct.

3 points for homework that is messy, even if it is done correctly OR not reading directions (being the reason for incorrect work)

1 point for homework done completely wrong or with very little effort or hard to read.

We are trying to encourage children to take homework seriously, do their best work and try hard even if they have some incorrect answers. Homework is all about responsibility and wanting to improve 🙂 Please know that I will always work with your child if it appears they truly do not understand homework concepts.
