Dearborn Author Assembly

Today the students went to an assembly to listen to an actual author from Dearborn. She talked to them about writing the story, where she got her ideas from, and how she got it published. The book was called “I’m Amina, An All American Girl”.

Curriculum Update

Reading

I have been assessing students this last week to see if they are ready to move on to more challenging books. So far everyone has shown good growth. I have started the higher groups on a chapter book/book study format. They have to be ready to discuss chapters and complete activities that go along with them.

Grammar

We will be expanding our vocabulary and discussing words that are synonyms(words that mean the same or close to the same thing) and antonyms(words that mean the opposite of another word).

 Writing

Students are working on Opinion writing. To go along with the science curriculum, students had to pick a favorite season. Then they had to come up with 2 reasons why they like it with an example for each. Students were introduced to using “sound words” in their writing to introduce their season. As always they wrap up their story with a statement or question to the reader/audience of their story.

Math

Students are in Module 3 which deals with nonstandard measurement and data collection and reading graphs. As an extra activity, the students made up surveys to ask their classmates and one person outside the classroom. Then they made up 3 questions about their survey for others to answer.

Science

The Earth Systems test is tomorrow. Our next topic will be Life Science dealing with plants and animals.

Social Studies

Our next unit is entitled “How Do We Learn About Places?” They will start by learning to make and read maps, and then practice their own address and the Absolute Location of other places.

100th Day of School

Tuesday will be the 100th day of school!  We’ve been talking about this in class for some time.  Your child is to wear 100 things on Monday.  For example, he/she can wear 100 beads strung on a necklace or on bracelets.  Some students have worn 100 stickers, but unfortunately, they do fall off.  I have attached some ideas for you.  Also they could just put 100 small things in a bag and attached the bag to themselves with a safety pin. You have all weekend to come up with something.  Have fun!
