Cans and Bottles

Keep those cans and bottles coming.

Scholastic Book Orders

In the scholastic book order I sent home there is a book called Summer Brain Quest 1-2. Many parents/students have found it very useful in getting ready for 2nd grade so they don’t slide back over the Summer. It is $12.50 and they also sell it at the Barnes and Noble book store.

Howard Clean Up Parade

May 20th from 9:45- 10:45 am.

Memorial Weekend

Students will have no school on Friday May 24th and Monday May 27th

Cans and Bottles Collection

The cans and bottles collection started this week. The money/proceeds from the bottles and cans will be used to purchase flowers around the school. The collection is for this week and next.

Field Trip

A little more info about the field trip. Children will be bringing their own lunch and drinks preferably in a bag and a plastic bottle so it can be thrown out. Parents who are chaperones will have other students beside their own child in their group.  No other sibling are aloud. Parents who can not attend don’t worry your child will be put in a small group with their classmates. Each group will be given a list of questions to answer as they walk around and explore the different buildings/ homes at the village. This field trip goes along with Social Studies Unit 4 they are beginning.

Teacher Appreciation Week

This week Howard school is celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week. A flyer was sent home with the activities involved. Today, the PTA provided a nice luncheon for the the teachers today. Also, some of my room moms decorated my bulletin board beautifully.

Birthday Bash (Thursday 5.2.19) 12:00 pm

Our classroom’s Birthday Bash is this Thursday at 12:00. If you want to bring something for the Bash, please let the PTA mom’s know, so everyone doesn’t bring the same thing. Their phone numbers are at the bottom of the Teacher Appreciation Week flyer.

Curriculum Night (Thursday 5.2.10) 5:00-6:30 pm

This Thursday is Howard School Curriculum Night. As in other years there will be many activities/games going on in the classrooms. Each session lasts for about 20 minutes, then when the bell rings you move onto another room.

Muffins For Mom (Friday 5.3.19) 7:45-8:45 am

Howard School is sponsoring  “Muffins For Mom”. A little treat for the moms in the school cafeteria on Friday morning from 7:45-8:45.

Field Trip: Greenfield Village (May 15th) 9:00-2:15

Money/Permission slips for the field trip was due this Monday. It’s $10.00 a per child and/or chaperone. If you have a membership it’s free. We will be leaving at 9:00 even though its a “late start” day, because we have to be back by around 2:15 for the buses to get to the next  job.

Science: Life Science: Animals

*How do they protect themselves?

*Where are their habitats?

*What do they do/need to survive?

*What are their movements/actions?

*Comparing adult animals to their babies.

Social Studies Unit 4 “How Do We Learn About the Past?”

*Identifying things in the past, present, and future.

*Identifying the parts of a calendar.

*Identifying artifacts(evidence) of the past.

*Identifying national holidays.

*Comparing schools today with schools in the past.

*Comparing families to families in the past.

Reading: Comprehension

Students are reading short stories, and the answering questions about the stories. Students are highlighting where the answer is found in the test, and then they write their answer in sentence form; not just a word or two. This goes along with the statements they write in Math.

Grammar

We are finishing up with antonyms(words that mean the opposite) and synonyms(words that mean the same thing). Next we will be starting verb endings (s, es, ing, ed). This will help with their writing and reading fluency.

Writing

Informational writing: Earth Day project

Realistic Fiction: Writing a story about something that could really happen, but not necessarily to themselves.

Math: Module 4

*Place value for 2 digit numbers (tens and ones)

*Adding and subtracting 10 and 1 from 2 digit numbers

*Comparing numbers with symbols and phrases. (is greater than, is less than, and is equal to)

*Addition and subtraction up to 40.

Social Studies – Bedroom Map

The students were given a sheet of paper labeled Home Map. Students are to use this paper to draw, label and color the items in their bedroom in the correct locations. Not every little thing, just the main items. (door , windows, bed, tables, dresser, rugs, closet ) This is not due until Friday.

Upcoming Dates

T 4.23.19 Tomorrow is the Howard school fundraiser at Famous Hamburgers. Part of the proceeds will go to Howard school. I believe it goes from 4:00-8:00.

W 4.24.19 Art show at the Dearborn Civic Center in the Art gallery. Many Dearborn/Howard students will have their art displayed. Nour Elzeny’s art was chosen from our class.

F 4.26.19 The PTA is sponsoring a spring extravaganza with a carnival them. The cost is $5.00.

M 5.20.19 Clean Up Parade at 9:45 am

M 6.10.19 Field Day for the students. The 1st graders usually go in the morning, but I will let you know for sure. This year the students will be getting lunch after they have completed their rotations.

TH 6.13.19 Class Picnic from 11:00 – 1:00 at the park by our school.

Spring Pictures

Pictures need to be returned or paid for by this Thursday. If you paid for them online, you need to write the code they gave you online on the form inside the picture packet. I need the pictures, the money or the code by Thursday. Most students have already paid for or returned the pictures.

Math

Students need some coins(change) to practice counting money and talking about Tens and Ones; 10 pennies, nickels and dimes would be great. Bring what they can.

Science (Animal Shelter)

Items for the animal shelter are due tomorrow. This is a first grade project. Every student needs to bring at least one item.

The Kid’s Heart Challenge

The assembly to kick off the “Kids Heart Challenge” was yesterday. A flyer with all the information was sent home yesterday. To start off, if they enroll online and choose a challenge for themselves they will get a glow in the dark bracelet. The more pledges they get the more items they can win.

Class “Warm Fuzzy” goals

Students are working on giving good apologies(not just “Sorry”) and compliments to each other.

Science Project

As part of the Life Science unit about plants and animals, we are asking first grade students to donate 1-2 items for the animals at the animal shelter. The handout gives a list of items that are needed by the shelter for the animals. The items will be delivered to the animal shelter this coming Wednesday(4.17.19)

Student Readers

Starting today, on Fridays, 2 students are chosen to read a book of their choosing to the class. If they choose a chapter book, they read 1 chapter. Today Jenna Daher read “Money  Money Honey Bunny” and Mohammed Alhababi read a chapter from Diary of a Wimpy Kid Meltdown.
