Activities for May 21st

Wow, it’s almost Memorial Day Weekend and the end of Ramadan! Dearborn Public Schools is closed for Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. I will still be posting a Friday Field Trip and on Saturday I am posting a story of Eid. My next regular activity post will be on Tuesday May 26th. Let’s get ready for today’s activities…

Letter of the Week

Our letter this week is Pp. It makes the puh sound and we write P with a big line and a little curve.

When you are outside today look for items that start with the letter P. Also check out signs in your neighborhood. See if there are any signs that have p’s on them.

Math

Today we are going to talk about time. More specifically “How long is a minute?” If you have a timer or stop watch you can use that. You can also use a second hand on a clock or a timer on your phone. Get a piece of paper and a pencil. Ask your child some “how long does it take” questions and write down their answers. How long does it take to… brush your teeth? write your name? put your shoes on? eat a snack? Now show them the timer or stop watch or clock and tell them you are going to time them. Have them march until they think a minute is over. When they stop, stop the timer and talk about if it was more than a minute or less than a minute. Have your child write their name and how long they marched. Talk about 1 minute being 60 seconds. Now have them march for 1 minute. Tell them you are going to start the timer and they will march and you will tell them when 1 minute is done. Now one more time march while counting to 60. That is 1 minute! As you do any of the activities above, brushing teeth, writing name, putting shoes on or eating a snack look at their estimates and use a timer while they are doing the activity.

Work Time

Turn off those screens and play with some toys, color, paint… anything you can think of!

Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).

Work Time (45-60 minutes): During work time kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS.  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.

Clean Up (about 15 minutes):  Kids clean up the mess they have made while playing.

Recall Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Story Time

Today we are going to re-read Owen and also listen to one of the books that I dropped off at your house. Make sure to get your book before you start the read aloud and you can turn the pages in your book of Giggle, Giggle, Quack!

Movement/Outside

Here is a song for while you are inside…

Nature Scavenger Hunt for the Kids {FREE Printable} - How to Nest ...

When you go outside you can do this fun scavenger hunt. You already found a lot of stuff on the left side but see if you can find things with different textures, shapes and colors. Have fun and I hope that everyone has a wonderful, fun, safe and healthy long weekend!!

Activities for May 20th

It is very interesting to hear a familiar story in another language. Listen for some words that may be similar to the English word.

Okay now we are going to listen to one more story. Pinkalicious is a story character that starts with the letter…P! In this story she also has a friend named Peteriffic. In their story they are going to pretend to be something that starts with a P. See if you find out what it is. Click on the link below.

Food Distribution Schedule Change

Dearborn Public Schools families are reminded that the meal distribution schedule will have a few changes starting the week of May 18 – the week before Memorial Day.

Because schools were scheduled to be closed on Friday and Monday for Memorial Day weekend, there will be no food distribution on May 22 and 25.

Meal distributions will still occur on Monday May 18 and on Wednesday May 20.  The May 20 distribution will include breakfasts and lunches for a full week, so families should be prepared to carry the larger quantity, including a half gallon of milk per student.

Through May 20 pickup times will continue to be later at four locations. Fordson High School, Woodworth Middle School, Salina Intermediate and McCollough Elementary will distribute meals from noon to 2 p.m.

The week after Memorial Day, meal distribution will go back to 10 a.m. to noon at all seven locations. Meals that week will be distributed on Wednesday, May 27 and Friday, May 29.

Dearborn Public Schools has been providing 65,000 grab-and-go meals a week for our students.

One person can pick up food for any student living in the home.  The child does not need to attend that school.  Each bag contains breakfast and lunch for the days until the next pickup.

The grab-and-go meals are provided free to families through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s School Lunch Program. Through the program, Dearborn Public Schools offered free lunch and breakfast to all kindergarten to 12th grade students before schools were closed to slow the spread of novel coronavirus.

Meal distribution schedule:

May 11, 13, 15, 18 and 20

Meals distributed from 10 a.m. to noon at Dearborn High School, Edsel Ford High School and Smith Middle School and from noon to 2 p.m. at Fordson High School, Woodworth Middle School, Salina Intermediate and McCollough Elementary.

NO DISTRIBUTIONS MAY 22 AND 25

May 27 and 29 and June 1, 3, 5, 8 and 10

Meals distributed from 10 a.m. to noon at all seven locations.

setting up the counting game
  • Place a bowl for each of you next to the playing space, as well as a die.
  • Give each child 20 small items for counting. (We use small glass gems, but you can use just about anything- beans, buttons, pennies, etc.)

How to Play Roll and Count

The object of the game is to be the first person to get all your items in your bowl. The first player rolls the die and places that many of his/her items in the bowl. Then the second player does the same thing. Play continues back and forth until one person gets all of his/her items in the bowl!

Activities for May 18th

Hello everyone! Happy Monday! Are we ready to start a new week? I have good news about Kindergarten Registration. For a student who is in PreK currently enrollment is automatic. Your student will be enrolled in Kindergarten for next year. They will ALL still need a new physical and copy of their immunizations. **If you have had any changes such as an address change or anything like that, you will need to register so that the district has the correct information on file.

Here we go with our morning song to start our daily activities…

Letter of the Week

Our letter this week is letter P. Capital P and lowercase p. They sound like puh. Pig, pickle and pizza all start with that same sound.

Draw 2 things that start with the letter P. Write a P next to them.

Math

For math today I would like you to explore the math site Happy Numbers that I set up for you. Click on the link below. Click on your child’s name and the password is 5.

We will be listening to this story again this week. Talk about the characters in the book. What animal is Owen? Who are the characters? How many characters are there in the book? Draw a picture of Owen.

Movement/Outside

It is supposed to be a rainy day but if there is a break in the rain try to go for a quick walk. If you can’t get outside maybe you can you a blanket like Owen’s to build a fort. If you build a fort make sure to read a book in your fort, maybe with a flashlight if it’s dark. Have a Happy Monday!

Registration for Next Year Pre-K and Kindergarten

Kindergarten Registration

The District was forced to modify its enrollment process after schools were abruptly closed in March to slow the spread of COVID-19. Traditional Kindergarten Roundups at our elementary schools had to be canceled as a result of the school closure.

To enroll in kindergarten, students must be five years old by September 1. Waivers are available for students who will turn five after September 1 but before December 1.  For parents already living in the district, the waivers need to be submitted by June 1. See the District website at https://dearbornschools.org/enroll for the waiver and more information.

Dearborn Public Schools also offers a free Young Fives program for students who will turn five between June 15 and December 1 this year. That all-day program is offered at select schools and follows the kindergarten curriculum. Young Fives is held at DuVall, Geer Park, Haigh, Henry Ford, Lindbergh, Maples, McCollough, Oakman, River Oaks, Salina, Snow, Whitmore-Bolles and William Ford elementary schools. The extra year allows those children to better develop the academic and emotional skills they need to succeed in school. The following year they would enroll in kindergarten at their neighborhood school. Parents interested in the program will need to enroll their child in the District and can contact Student Services to learn more.

Preschool Registration

Parents interested in the state-sponsored GSRP preschool can sign up to receive more information about registration when it becomes available at https://cotter.dearbornschools.org/. The Great Start Readiness Program is not accepting official applications yet while awaiting more direction from the state.  GSRP is open to low-income and working-class families at no cost to the family.

The District is also accepting registration for paid programs for the fall, including preschool programs and before and afterschool childcare. Parents interested in those programs can learn more by visiting https://iblog.dearbornschools.org/earlychildhood/. Scroll down on the home page to find a list of programs and prices for next school year.  Registration forms are available under a separate tab and can be printed and mailed in to reserve your spot. Children in paid programs do not need to reside in Dearborn Public Schools.

It’s Time for a Friday Field Trip!

Today we will explore the Great Lakes. These are the lakes that are surrounding our state of Michigan. The lakes that surround Michigan are…Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. We live in the middle of the city so we only see this part of Michigan unless we travel. Who has been to the lake? The lakes are a beautiful and fun place to be. Today we will explore a lake near us.

There are 3 different videos. They are about the land by the lakes called Wetlands, Algae and Lake Sturgeon (fish). Lake Sturgeon look like this…

You can choose one video to watch or you can watch all three. Enjoy…

Have a great weekend!

Activities for May 14th

Letter of the Week

Our letter this week is D. We have listened to many words that start with D in songs and we have written the letter D as well. Here is one more D song to finish off the week.

Write capital D 5 times. Write lowercase d 5 times.

Math

For our math activity we are going to work on the concept of zero. I would like for you to ask your child the following questions:

  • How many chairs are in the dining room?
  • How many people live in your house?
  • How many real penguins live in your house?
  • How many windows do you have in your house?
  • How many real dinosaurs live in your house?

If your child responds with the word “none” remind them that the number for nothing is zero!

Work Time

Turn off those screens and play with some toys, color, paint… anything you can think of!

Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. Story Time

This is another one of our classroom books. I hope you have seen your child’s face light up as they listened to these stories that they are familiar with. This is how the joy of reading begins. They are feeling like they are readers already!

Movement/Outside

Make sure you get outside today if the weather cooperates. Here is a movement activity song to start you out. The kids love Tooty Ta! It is so so silly!

Have a great day!
