Activities for April 23rd

Good news! We found out that teachers will be allowed in their classrooms next week for 30 minutes. I will be able to gather some materials to help support your child with their at-home learning. They each have a journal to write in and I also have the books that they were supposed to get each month. I will be dropping those off on your porches on Wednesday afternoon next week. As much as I would love to stay and visit, I have to drop off and leave because of our social distancing. I will give you a better idea on the time I will drop off next week incase your child would like to be at the door or window for a quick wave. I’m thinking it will be around 2:00.

I would also like to set up a Google Meet for Monday! I will send out the time and instructions on that. That will also be later in the day. I know that Ramadan is beginning and your days may look a little different, especially your mornings.

For today…

Letter S

After listening to the song you can draw a picture of a snake and the sun. Write the words “snake” and “sun”. Remember when you do work, make sure to write your name on your paper too. Send me a picture on Dojo when you are done. I can’t wait to see you!

Patterning

Today we will work on patterning with cereal. Make sure to wash your hands and then you can eat the cereal for a snack when you are done. Watch the video for an example of patterning with cereal…

Work Time

Don’t forget Work Time is an important time of our PreK day. Here is what it looks like…

Plan for Work Time (playtime):  Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).
Kids will tell you what they are planning to do/want to play with/how they will use toys at home.

Work Time: Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.

Clean Up:  Kids clean up the mess they have made while playing.

Recall:  Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Music and Movement/Gross Motor Activity

I know it’s cold and a little rain is in the forecast. Try to get outside for a quick walk if you can but if not here is a song to move your body to.

Have a great day!!

Activities for April 22nd

Today I will be trying to reach out to families with a phone call. It will probably show up “unavailable” so please try to answer. I just want to check up on everyone and see how your families are doing. I also want to see what the best line of communication is for you. I am using this blog as our main way but I also have the PreK Facebook page and Class Dojo. It seems more of the parents are linked to the Class Dojo page than anything else. I would like to get everyone signed up for the blog. I also want to find out about technology. What are you using to view my posts? I will be calling later today. I know we are all on different schedules. I will also be setting up a google meet so the kids can see each other and I can see them. This may not be until Monday because I want to make sure that everyone can log on. The kids now have student accounts. I will send out information about that after I speak with everyone. I hope everyone is doing well.

Letter S

Here are some ideas to do with the letter S (choose one or do more if you would like)

  • Talk to your child about the sound of S and ask them for ideas of what words start with that sound
  • Go on a letter hunt around your house and find objects that start with S or have S on them
  • Look through grocery ads or magazines and circle the letter S
  • Practicing social distancing, walk around your neighborhood and look around for the letter S

Math/Science

Today you can make playdoh if you have the ingredients and your family wants to! Here are two recipes that you can use – one uses the stovetop and the other doesn’t use heat at all and has a simpler recipe. Have fun!

Play Dough

Ingredients:
1 cup Flour
1 cup Water
1/4 cup Salt
1 Tbsp Vegetable Oil
2 tsp Cream of Tarter or Alum
Food Coloring (actual coloring or a kool-aid packet will do)
Sauce Pan and Wooden Spoon

Pour in all ingredients into saucepan. Stir until everything is mixed well.

Once the mixture is (mostly) clump free, heat over MEDIUM heat.
Stir. Don’t stop stirring. After a few minutes it will start to clump up.
Just keep stirring until the Play Dough is formed. It will form one big clump.
Remove from heat, and knead by hand. Once cooled, store in airtight container.

No-Cook Play Dough

Ingredients:

2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
2 tbsp oil

3/4 cup water
Mix water, oil and food color together before adding to dry mixture. Mix until pliable. Keep in container or plastic bag.

The Three Bears

This is one of the books we read at school and your child knows the story. Have your child tell the story along with the read aloud. When they are done they can draw a picture of the “characters” in the story. Papa bear, Mama bear, Baby bear and Goldilocks. Send my their picture on Class Dojo.

Hope everyone has a great day!

2nd Activity for April 21st

This week we started our updated plan for At-Home Learning. I wanted you all to know that “Work Time” is a big part of our PreK day. I want you to see what it looks like so you can implement it at home at least once a day. This is what it looks like.

Work Time

This is a new section! During the school day children have time to make a plan for what they would like to do, and then work with those materials for an hour. We then clean up and talk about what we used, who we played with, if our plans changed, etc. We are all spending a lot of time on the computer or other screens right now and it is important for young children to turn them off for a bit and have free play time.

Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.

Work Time (45-60 minutes): Worktime/Kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.

Clean Up (about 15 minutes):  Kids clean up the mess they have made while playing.

Recall Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Letter S

When we write S we say “Little curve, little curve”. Practice writing letter S today. Write big S and little s. They look the same!

Circles of Different Sizes

Collect objects in your home that are circles or ovals, trace them onto some paper. Compare the sizes, which are biggest? Smallest? Added challenge, cut them out! After you cut them out, turn it into an art project! Build a snowman, order them by size, make a caterpillar, etc.! Have fun and be creative! Send me a picture when you are done.

Have a Great Day!

It’s Time for a Friday Field Trip

Today we are going to the Cincinnati Zoo! They have been doing Home Safaris since we started our at-home learning. You can watch their special animal of the day live at 3:00 on Facebook at Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden. If you don’t have Facebook or you can’t watch at 3:00 it’s okay! They record it and post it on their website. They have shown lots of animals already. See it you can find the Otters (my daughters favorite) and the Hippos. The very first Home Safari was with Fiona the baby Hippo. If you go all the way to the bottom you will find Fiona. Click on the video, watch and learn.

Just click the link below and scroll down to the animal of your choice.

Have a great weekend!

Activities for April 16th

Please remember to take the survey. I have had 3 families that have responded so far. This is just to get an idea of how everyone is doing and to see how we may be able to help.

Our Letter of the Week is Qq

Opposites

Your child will listen to a book about opposites. Opposites is an important concept as it helps build math, science and language skills through comparing and describing. It helps to build children’s vocabulary as they gain an understanding of these words used to describe things.

https://watch.vooks.com/popular-titles-1/videos/opposites

After listening to the story, you will ask your child to think about some of the opposites he/she remembers from that story. You will then take a piece of paper fold it in half from left to right, then again in half from top to bottom and then again from left to right , and one last time fold in half from top to bottom. So when you open it up it will look like this.

You should have 16 little squares

Then you can say to your child, “I wonder if you can draw some of the opposite pairs you saw in the book? Or maybe we can make our own opposite pairs too?”

Encourage your child to draw the pairs. Maybe you can draw one and then your child draws one. THE FOCUS HERE IS ON YOUR CHILD TALKING ABOUT THE OPPOSITE PAIRS HE/SHE HEARD IN THE STORY, AND THEN TRYING TO DRAW THOSE PAIRS AS BEST HE OR SHE CAN. If drawing becomes too much of a challenge encourage your child by doing half in the morning and half in the evening. Or if it is becoming too much, then as a parent you can draw the pictures while describing what you are doing by your child.

This is my example of opposite pairs

Next your child can cut out the pairs. Please encourage your child to do this on his/her own. ALL CHILDREN SHOULD BE CUTTING BY THEMSELVES.

Now ask your child to mix up the cards and turn them over so you can’t see them.

Now they can play by themselves or with someone. Turn over 2 cards at a time. If they don’t match you turn them back over and try again.

Big and Happy are NOT opposites so try again..

Happy and Sad are opposites! So you can take those and try to find another pair or it can be someone else’s turn.

Have fun! Please remember do not rush through activities. Take your time, talk about what you are doing, what you notice , etc. This doesn’t have to be done in one sitting.

Have a great day!
