Activities for May 19th

Letter of the Week

Letter P is written with a big line and a small curve.

How many items can you find in your house that start with the letter P. Remember to test is out with that “puh” sound. Take a picture of the P items that you found and send me the picture on Class dojo.

Math

Today you are going to play Roll and Count You will need… *dice (you can use the die that I brought to your house, it has the dots to count) *40 small items to count *2 cups or small bowl Set up your area to look similar to this…

setting up the counting game
  • Place a bowl for each of you next to the playing space, as well as a die.
  • Give each child 20 small items for counting. (We use small glass gems, but you can use just about anything- beans, buttons, pennies, etc.)

How to Play Roll and Count

The object of the game is to be the first person to get all your items in your bowl. The first player rolls the die and places that many of his/her items in the bowl. Then the second player does the same thing. Play continues back and forth until one person gets all of his/her items in the bowl!

Work Time

Turn off those screens and play with some toys, color, paint… anything you can think of!

Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).

Work Time (45-60 minutes): During work time kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS.  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.

Clean Up (about 15 minutes):  Kids clean up the mess they have made while playing.

Recall Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Story Time

Today we are going to listen to Owen again. This time the person reading the story is actually the author of the story. Kevin Henkes, he wrote the book and he is going to read it to you today. He may also give you a drawing tip. You drew Owen yesterday. Go get your picture. Now get another piece of paper and you can try drawing Owen again along with the author if you would like.

Movement/Outside

When you go outside today you could take the sidewalk chalk with you and practice writing the letter P, try to write your name too.

Have a great day!
