Activities for May 12th

Letter of the Week

Our letter this week is D. Capital D and lowercase d look very different. Capital D is written with a big line and a big curve. Lowercase d is written with a small curve, small curve and a big line.

Draw a picture of two things that start with the letter D. Now write D. If you can write the words of what you drew, write the whole word (s).

Math

Last week on Thursday you compared things that were bigger/smaller or taller/shorter. Today we are going to compare again. For our math activity we are going to work on comparing weight. Ask your child the following questions:

  • Which is heavier: a mouse or an elephant? a bike or a car? a house or a block?
  • Which is lighter: a feather or a brick? an egg or a basketball? a tree or a flower?

Find some objects around your house and have your child compare their sizes and test to see which one feels heavier and which one feels lighter! Send me a picture of your child figuring out the different weights!

Work Time

Turn off those screens and play with some toys, color, paint… anything you can think of!

Planning Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s ability to organize their time by having them make a “plan” with you about what they would like to play with.  Children do this everyday with us at school. It helps children learn to organize their thoughts. Adults make plans all the time to organize their thoughts (shopping lists are made before going to the grocery store, to do lists are made to help plan your day etc..).

Work Time (45-60 minutes): During work time kids play WITHOUT ELECTRONICS.  Kids can use toys to pretend play, build, and create.

Clean Up (about 15 minutes):  Kids clean up the mess they have made while playing.

Recall Time (5 minutes): Build your child’s memory of events by having your child tell you what they did while they played (ask “tell me how you did that” or “what did you do next?”)

Story Time

This is another story that we have read in class. Stop the story part of the way through and ask your child if they can tell you the ending.

Movement/Outside

Here is a movement activity for inside…an Alphabet Dance. Try to get outside and go for a walk. Don’t forget our letter this week is D so look for signs with the letter D or d on them.

Have a great day everyone! I miss you all.
