Thursday OT Activity – Creating Visual Schedules

Thursday OT Activity – Creating Visual Schedules

Visual schedules help students develop routines and a sense of control over their daily activities. Visual schedules also provide visual cues for sequencing the steps of activities. The following link shows examples of visual schedules for a morning self care routine, morning school at home routine, as well as a blank schedule so you can make your own checklist based on your family’s routines. Visual cues include words for students who are able to read, and/or pictures for those who benefit from pictures to comprehend.

Hi friends! I’m having difficulty uploading my videos today unfortunately but would like you to work on a similar activity as we did last Tuesday. Today work on sorting objects that are black. Use your core vocabulary board when working with your families to say “yes” an item is black or “no” it is not. After you have sorted all your items be sure to count and find out which group has “more” items and which has “less.” When you have finished sorting and counting, use your core word of the week “I” to tell your families “I want” and pick one or more of the items that were chosen from your homes to play with! Review my video from last Tuesday to see how to work through this activity. I hope to have my videos up and running again tomorrow.

During this month we have been focusing on telling time and using our core vocabulary boards to learn and talk about using “today,” “tomorrow,” and “yesterday.” Ms. Harden wrote a beautiful song to help us to continue learning about this! Check it out below.

Listen to the song below about our core vocabulary color word this week, “black.”

Tuesday

Hi friends! I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! This week the core vocabulary word we will be focusing on is “I” and the color word is “black.” I will be posting video activities related to these words this week. Take a look at Ms. Dawn’s video below that models how to use the word “I” on her core vocabulary board!

Word of the Week = I

Enjoy listening to the following songs and stories with your child. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Listen to a video all the way through without interruption. Demonstrate for your child how to point to ‘I’ on a core vocabulary communication board each time you hear the word in a song or story.
  2. Play the video a second time and continue to point to ‘I’ when you hear it. Pause the video periodically to give your child time to look at or to point to the ‘I’ picture symbol.
  3. Try slowing down the video speed to see if it helps your child follow along and respond. There is a settings icon at the bottom of all youtube videos that allows you to adjust the playback speed, try 0.75. You want to find a speed that gives your child more time to mentally process the language but at the same time still makes the video sound fun and engaging.
  4. Try listening to at least 1 song and 1 book each day.
  5. Have fun! If you’re enjoying the activity, your child will too!
