Welcome back from the long holiday weekend. It was great to meet all of you last week! To recap, we worked at getting to know each other, building our classroom community, and finding an SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) book. This week we will continue by setting up our binder and metacognitive logs ( composition books) and establishing our SSR+ expectactions. Starting on Wednesday we will take the NWEA reading test to see where you are currently at in your reading. Remember to do your best and that the results are just a snapshot of you as a reader. You can read! Friday we will focus on the books we read over summer and prepare our book talks. This is a valuable experience because it allows others to hear what books are out there and gives you a chance to use your presentation skills. Speaking and listening are part of our Language Arts requirements.

We are looking forward to seeing and hearing about what you read this summer! Remember the 3+ forms ( 1 for each book) are due by Friday, Sept. 6th. The requirements and forms are available on the link above.

Wow, the final week of 8th grade is here.

This week we will be viewing the movie The Outsiders and comparing and contrasting it to the book, You will create a graphic organizer of your choice to show this.

Homework this week is to write an email to your parents and me outlining your summer reading plan. This email needs to be sent by Wednesday. Follow the guidelines given in class. My email address is: lesseln@dearbornschools.org

Be sure to read at least 2 appropriate books for high school no matter where you plan to attend. Remember reading over the summer helps you grow. Below is the requirements if you will be attending Dearborn high schools. You may start reading now to get ahead start. Enjoy reading!

Incoming Freshmen Summer Reading Letter (2)

This week you will be writing your letter to your senior self and placing it in an unsealed stamped addressed envelope to turn in at the beginning of class Friday. The letter will be mailed to you around Spring break of your senior year so be sure to make it something you will appreciate reading.

Welcome Back!

This week you will be wrapping up SSR plus by writing your final exit ticket (finished book only), writing your final reflection letter and giving your final book talk. The high school requires you to read 2 appropriate for high school books over the summer so now is great time to start. For homework you will need to get a legal size envelope, address it to yourself, for the return address use your own or that of someone you know won’t move in the next 4 years, finally put a U.S. forever stamp in the top right corner. Due Thursday, June 7.

This week we will be viewing the movie ” Freedom Writer’s”. Students are expected to make comments, questions and connections on a looseleaf piece of paper based on the movie. These will be collected on Thursday. Anyone absent should be sure to turn it in based on what they viewed.

Reminder: Exit Tickets for their final SSR+ book are due by Tuesday, May 28th.  Book talks will be given on Wednesday-Friday next week.
