Note : If you do not have your novel at home, or you are expecting to finish it soon, you may use any online platform available to you for access to books. You can find a list of sources on my blog and Google Classroom.

IXL

This is the only thing not linked through Google Classroom. To access go to IXL.com and type in your username ( Remember it ends in @bryantmiddle) and your password.

I have assigned the following to you:

1. 8th Grade Grammar Z Sentences, Run-Ons, and Fragments

2. 8th Grade Vocabulary Q Prefix/ Suffix Pre/Re/ Sub

Tips for Reaching Your Smart Goal of 80%:

* Before starting a skill you can click on “Learn with An Example” at the top of the page.

* If you miss a question, read the step-by-step explanation to explain why.

* If you’re really stuck, work on skill recommendations at the bottom of the page.

Other Activities

1. Start or continue a journal about what life is like for you in this time period. It can help your mind as well as perhaps serve as a primary source to others one-day. Wouldn’t that be cool to know a future generation might read yours just like you have read past generations.

2. A former student, Bailey, who attended Bryant just like you, has put together a nightly “ History Bedtime Story” where she shares a story of some history from Detroit on Facebook. Don’t let the title scare you off. The stories are quirky, little known facts about Detroit. Give it a try. On top of being an engineer at GM (I believe,) she runs a tour company and club called Detroit History Tours and The Detroit History Club. I thought it would be cool for you to hear from someone, who once sat in the same classrooms as you. Not sure if Facebook is needed to access. I’m hoping it works. Let me know. If you enjoy it, look for her other nightly stories. https://www.facebook.com/detroithistorytours/videos/501651760518854/

For now, continue to follow the Flowers for Algernon calendar (including packet work and vocabulary) and continue reading your SSR+ book. Remember access to the story, Flowers for Algernon is on Google-Classroom

Week of March 9

This week we will be continuing to read and discuss Flowers for Algernon. Be sure to follow the calendar (https://iblog.dearbornschools.org/lesseln/wp-content/uploads/sites/558/2020/03/Flowers-for-Algernon-Calendar.pdf) given last week, especially if you are absent. Each day at home you should be working on your packet and reviewing what we read in class. Since we have been discussing different tests used to assess people, I have posted several personality tests on Google-classroom for those interested in taking for fun. In addition, be sure you are reading your SSR+ book. The last day for SSR + exit tickets is next Friday 3/20.

Reminders:

3/12 Thursday : Flex Day

3/13 Friday: 1/2 day

Week of March 2nd

This week kicks off MArch is reading month. Though, in here, every month is reading month. You are expected to read 50+ pages a week between class and home. Why, you ask? The reason is pretty simple it is the easiest way to help you grow as a learner. Don’t believe me then see the chart below.

Image result for the importance of reading

Many of you are struggling with completing your homework which is simply reading at home. Some of you have even went so far as to turn in exit tickets for SSR+ books you haven’t finished reading in an attempt to get a score/grade. This doesn’t work. In order to become a better reader and a better student the answer is simple- just READ!

Parents it is important that your child reads daily. If you see they have a zero for an exit ticket for SSR+ it means they haven’t read. Please encourage them to read and finish their book. Refrain from saying get your SSR exit ticket done- it defeats the purpose making it more about the grade then the reading.

This week we will begin a unit exploring this essential question:

In what different ways can people be intelligent?

Students will be reading Flowers for ALgernon as we explore this question. They will be given a calendar and a packet to work through. I’m attaching a calendar for you as well.
