March 21-24

Hello Families! We have a short week, so our spelling test will be on Thursday. As you have probably noticed, the words are getting increasingly more difficult. Please do your best to help your child understand and apply the spelling patterns each week. We do not want them to necessarily memorize the words because when they do that they usually can’t spell them for more than just a week. We are hoping that they learn the spelling rules and patterns so that they can spell these words and others that have similar spelling patterns. Here are this week’s words:
Spelling

Words

1. make

2. take

3. name

4. game

5. page

6. race

7. their

8. sleep

9. wash

10. before

Notice that most of the words end in a silent “e,” which makes the long.

Some of you received an invitation for Parent/Teacher conferences. Please sign and return that invitation and let me know if you need a different time slot. If you did not receive one, please let me know if you wish to have an appointment.

As we enter our last quarter, we are really starting to prepare for second grade. This means that students should be continuing to read, write, and practice math strategies at home. Our hope is that they leave first grade with a love for reading and writing, and exposure to many Math concepts so they can have a successful year in second grade. My students know that they can borrow my books and materials to extend their learning at home. If your child brings home a math game or book, please make sure he/she takes great care of it.

If you are traveling for Spring Break, have a safe and wonderful time with your family!

One thing we have been doing a lot lately is looking at our spelling pattern and seeing if we can find it in our books so that we learn how do apply it. For example, this week’s pattern is “ay” in most words, so they should be able to read most words with “ay” it them.

Please continue to show your children examples of maps at home or online. We are also taking about human and physical characteristics.
Examples of Human characteristics: bridges, buildings, tunnels, train tracks

Physical characteristics: hills, mountains, lakes, oceans, cliffs, forests

In science we are talking about the importance of the sun
1. It warms the earth.
2. It gives us light.
3. It gives plants and people energy.
4. It helps plants grow.

In Math, we are learning about 2-D and 3-D shapes. Look at the objects in your home. See if your child can name the shape of each object.

February 8

Hello Families!
Here are our spelling words for the short week 🙂 One thing we have been focusing on with reading is to look at words that have similar letters or patterns so that we can solve new words. For example:

at, sat, matter, Saturday all have the “at” chunk in them. Or track, rack, cracked, stacking

This might be helpful to you. When you are reading with your child and he/she gets stuck, you could say “do you know a word that looks like that?” Or, “I know you know “look, ” so you can figure this word out “hooked.”

1. fly

2. flat

3. flash

4. flower

5. place

6. plug

7. under

8. of

9. some

10. were

I will send a note home, but I am allowing children to bring in a wrapped treat and/or a card for Valentine’s Day on Thursday. This is optional, so do not worry if you do not have time to do this. There will be plenty of sugar for everyone that day 🙂

Have a great week!

February

I cannot believe it is February!! This year is going by so fast and it’s so awesome watching your children learn and grow. Here are some things that we will be learning about in the next few weeks:

We will learn that places with addresses have “absolute locations.” Additionally, we will learn the difference between human (buildings, playgrounds, racetracks, houses) and physical (trees, oceans, hills, desserts) characteristics.

Science: We are continuing to learn about the importance of the sun, reasons for seasons, and weather.

Week of Jan. 25

Hello Families! Just a quick reminder about our writing notebooks: Your child is responsible for writing the writing topic in his/her notebook at the end of the day. We do this as a class and I explain what they should be writing about at home. Many students are doing a fabulous job of writing complete sentences and checking for capitals and periods. Some children are reporting that they either forgot or did not have time to write at home. Please remember that this assignment has many purposes, all of which will help your child become a more fluent reader, writer, and communicator. I encourage you to work with your child on this assignment and have discussions about the topic before they write. Thank you for your continued support. Happy New Year!

I hope you all had a warm and safe holiday with your families and friends. I really missed my students over the break and we had a great first day back at school (although we were all a little sleepy by mid-afternoon. Here are some reminders:

3. Talk about punctuation in books such as commas, apostrophes, quotation marks, question marks, periods, and exclamation marks. We are learning about all of these and they help build fluency.
4. We are learning about nouns, verbs, antonyms (opposites) and synonyms (words that mean the same), so please use this language with your child.

I cannot stress enough how important it is for your child to stay academically engaged over the break. Students (especially first graders) tend to take a few steps back if they do not read, write and practice some math over a long break like this. I do not want them to lose their momentum, as they are doing so great. Please take a thirty minutes each day to ask your child to read his/her books, write in a journal (or anywhere!), and practice some math (counting coins, telling time, or adding and subtracting). I will send their login information for myon. com They can also try some activities on starfall.com, abcya.com or softschools.com Have a wonderful holiday with family and friends. Looks like it will be easy to stay warm 🙂
