Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year

Dear Families,

Welcome to a new school year! I am really excited about being your child’s teacher this year. We will watch your child learn and grow through new experiences. I am writing this letter to inform you of some of our classroom procedures. It will be helpful to refer back to this letter throughout the school year.

Supplies:
Your child will be given the necessary supplies to complete their work, but if they misuse or lose them, you will need to replace them. I am suggesting that each child bring in the following supplies:
1. Backpack
2. 2 boxes of Kleenex
3. 1 box of Crayola crayons
4. 1 package of Dry Erase Markers
5. 1 box of pencils
6. Scissors
7. Glue
8. 2 spiral notebooks
9. Ziplock bags

Miller School Expectations:
1. Be Responsible: Follow directions, be prepared, and always do your best.
2. Be Respectful: Respect your space and materials. Use manners and kind language.
3. Be Safe: Always walk, keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself, and use classroom materials properly.

Discipline Plan:
We have a “HOW IS YOUR DAY” chart in our classroom. Each day, all students begin on “Green” and will switch cards if necessary.
Green: Student is following expectations.
Yellow: Warning: student is displaying behavior that is interrupting his, hers, or others’ learning.
Orange: Students will fill out a “Think About it Form,” which must be signed by his/her parent.
Red: Contact his/her parent and submit an office referral form.
Blue: Complete a “Think About it” form, office referral, and contact parents.

I expect students to be kind to one another and demonstrate positive behavior. These students may be rewarded with incentives such as computer time, Miller Bucks, pencils, etc.

Homework Folder:
Students will bring a folder home each evening containing his/her homework and important information from school. Please be sure to check the folder and send it to school the following day.

Once again, I would like to welcome you and your child to our classroom. I believe in establishing a strong, positive relationship with you, as this will benefit your child. I look forward to meeting all of you at Open House and encourage you to visit your child’s school and classroom.
Thank you in advance for being supportive and actively involved in your child’s learning!

Thank you,
Mrs. Klan

Hello Families!
We have been talking a lot about not running out of stamina from now until the end of the year. Many of our students are getting “Spring Fever” and are becoming easily distracted with the weather and the idea that summer vacation is right around the corner. Please talk to your child about staying serious and focused during the school day because we still have many days of instruction left. I am continuing to work hard to get them prepared for second grade and I am hoping for your support 🙂 We have also had to have several discussions about being kind to each other. They are such a nice group of students and I want them to treat one another with kindness and respect. Please reinforce this at home.

May 31: We are going to have a first grade picnic at Miller on our playground on Tuesday, May 31 at 11:30. Please pack your child a lunch for that day. I wll provide a treat for them. They may bring any outdoor playground equipment or bubbles with them to school that day.

We will take the Math and Reading NWEA test next Monday and Tuesday. This is a very important test, as it will help demonstrate the tremendous growth your child has made this year. I am so proud of all of them and I really want their hard work and abilities to be reflected on these tests. Additionally, I have started testing them to determine their final reading level for the year. The end of the year first grade expectation is a level 16, and some children will even surpass that level. Please continue to work with your child at home, as they make improvements each time that they read a book. Thank you for your continued support.

April 18

Hello Families!
I hope you all enjoyed this beautiful warm weather this weekend! I hope this means Spring is here to stay. As we dive into the last couple months of school, it is so important to keep the momentum going. Your child should continue to read each evening and make sure to keep working on counting money, telling time, and completing the homework assignments. I will remind you that the expectation for first grade is for your child to read a level 16, which means his/her books (in their reading bag) should be between 18-24. I am continuing to work hard to meet with children regularly, especially in reading and writing. When I introduce a new book to your child, my hope is that they take it home and practice reading it, focusing on the new vocabulary and word patterns. Let’s work together to help your child’s end of the year be successful and rewarding.
