November 21

Hello Families!
This is a short, two-day week so we are planning to make it a productive one ๐Ÿ™‚ Please make sure your child reads his/her books over the break. The more they read, the less challenging it will be for them to resume the routine once our break is over. Also (and most importantly), reading often increases their connections with stories, informational texts, and love for reading. Please make this a priority in your home. I promise it will benefit your child.

Here are the spelling words, but they will not have a test until next Friday.

Homework Nov. 15

Tonight’s homework is a math page with domino fact families. They are supposed to write 2 addition and 2 subtraction numbers using the same three numbers (the whole and two parts). The whole number is the sum of the two parts. For example:

whole= 13
Part= 7
Part= 6

6+7=13
7+6=13
13-6=7
13-7=6

Have a great night!!

November 14 homework

Hello Families,
Tonight’s homework is a worksheet with two story problems (one addition and one subtraction problem). I am teaching the children how determine whether it is an addition or subtraction problem. For these problems, we are learning to start on the number line and jump forward or back depending on whether it is an addition or subtraction problem.

Week of Nov. 14

Hello families!
I hope you are all having a wonderful weekend! Here are our plans for the week:

Spelling
1. fish

2. wish

3. push

4. fresh

5. wash

6. mash

7. so

8. do

9. find

10. three

Reading: We are starting to read nonfiction or informational books. I am teaching students to use the text features such as bold words, photos, glossaries, subheadings, labels, diagrams, table of contents and indexes to read these books. Students are learning to find the main topic (which is usually the title of the book) and all the key details or facts that are in a book. We will be reading informational books about the seasons and weather in science.

Science: We are learning that weather changes daily and can be recorded, observed and studied by meteorologists. These scientists use many tools such as rain gauges and barometers to study the weather. We talked about these terms so far: rain, clear, sunny, foggy, cloudy, snow, ice, thunderstorms. We’ve also learned that the sun is a star and we depend on it for our heat, energy, food, and light.

Math: We continue to look at graphs (data) almost every day and answer questions to show that we can interpret this data. I sent home some plastic clocks for students to practice telling time to the hour and half hour. We are learning that 3:30 is actually half past three (which is tricky for some of them). Please take care of any materials that I send home as they take me a long time to make and can be somewhat expensive. If you need additional materials, I am more than happy to supply you with whatever I have. We are also learning to count tens and ones. We will keep working on concepts such as these: 56 = 5 tens and 6 ones. 50+6=56.

Social Studies: We will start talking about needs and wants. We will learn that all humans need air, space, shelter, food, and water. Our needs vary from one family to the next.

Writing: We will begin researching a season and gather facts about this season for our informational writing. You can encourage and help your child by looking for information online about his/her season.

Grammar: Please continue to review nouns and verbs. Nouns are people, places or things and proper nouns are specific people, places, or things such as Mrs. Klan, Sam, Target, Miller School. Verbs are action words. You will be impressed to know that many of our first graders can identify synonyms (words that have the same meaning like chilly and cold, surprised and alarmed) and antonyms are opposites such as up-down, happy-sad.

Parent Meeting: Tuesday, November 15 at 9:00- Please join us to see what your child’s literacy lessons look like. I look forward to seeing you!

Conferences: We have parent teacher conferences on Wednesday and Thursday evening. Please contact me if you need to reschedule. I will find a way to meet with 100% of my families, as this meeting is very important and beneficial for you, your child, and me ๐Ÿ™‚ Have a wonderful weekend!

Homework 11-9

Good Morning, Families
Tonight’s homework will ask students to record the time to the hour. Please continue to practice this skill at home. We will be learning about time to the half hour very soon and this is a bit more challenging.

Please check your conference appointment time. Some of you are scheduled for tomorrow after school. I encourage you to arrive just before your scheduled time, as I have a packed schedule. If the time does not work for you, please let me know and we will reschedule. I look forward to meeting with you and will do whatever I can to make this convenient for you.

Snacks: Please send two healthy snacks to school with your child. We return from lunch at 11:55 and this makes for a long afternoon. I usually have a healthy cereal for those who do not have snack, but it is not easy to keep this stocked ๐Ÿ™‚ If you have healthy cereal such as cheerios or any other healthy snack that you wish to donate, we would be very grateful. Thank You!!

9:00 Parent Meeting Today

Mr. Awada is holding a parent meeting (Principal’s Corner) in the cafeteria today at 9:00 ๐Ÿ™‚

Tonight’s homework will be a worksheet on telling time to the hour. Please request a plastic clock to practice with at home if you feel it would help your child. Simply send me a quick e-mail. ๐Ÿ™‚

Week of Nov. 7

Greetings, Families!
This weather is unbelievable! I hope you are out enjoying it! Here are our plans for the week:

Reading: We are going to start focusing more on informational or nonfiction books for a bit. These books are filled with facts and have different text features than fiction books. There are usually the following features:
1. Bold words
2. Glossaries
3. Index
4. Table of Contents
5. Photographs
6. Labels and captions
7. Diagrams and drawings

I am teaching the students that we do not always have to be able to read all the words, but we can use the text features in order to comprehend the book. Please take time to look closely at nonfiction books depending on your child’s interests.

Writing: We will finish our opinion writing this week with a paragraph about a new pet. Next we will work on informational writing. We will begin by looking at nonfiction books about the weather and seasons. They will write an informational paragraph about the season of their choice after gathering facts about that season. You can support this at home by researching and learning about the season of your child’s choice on the internet or in books.

Social Studies: We will continue to compare and contrast schools, transportation, clothing, toys, and chores from the past and present.

Science: We begin our unit on seasons and weather. We will learn that the sun provides heat, energy, and light to humans and animals. We will begin this week by observing daily changes in the weather such as cloud cover, sunshine, precipitation, and temperature. Please take time to talk about the daily changes in weather, just as scientists do ๐Ÿ™‚

Math: As promised, we will be learning how to tell time using an analog ๐Ÿ™‚ This is a tricky concept, especially when we are learning how to tell time to the half hour. I will send plastic clocks home for extra practice for those who seem to find it challenging. If you would like extra materials or activities for your child, please ask. We are also still learning how to solve addition and subtraction problems in multiple ways.

Please remember we do not have school on Tuesday.
Also, remember that meeting for parent teacher conferences is mandatory and I look forward to this time with you. Please contact me if you need an appointment reminder. klanr@dearbornschools.org

Homework 11-3

Sorry for the late post. The homework tonight involved the students counting tens and ones. We have been learning that each number has a value depending on what “place” it is in. For example, the 5 in the number 57 has a value of 50 because it is in the tens place. I am going to send some plastic tens and ones home with some students. If your child brings these home, please let them practice using the tens and ones to represent numbers.

Parent / Teacher Conferences: We begin conferences next week, and the expectation at Miller is that 100% of our families meet with their child’s/children’s teacher(s). I look very forward to this time with you because it provides an opportunity for us to discuss your child’s progress, strengths, academic goals, and growth thus far. Also, I encourage and welcome you to voice any concerns, share triumphs, and ask any questions about your child. I sent reminder notes home today. Please return these, confirming that the time works for you. If the time is not convenient, I will reschedule your appointment. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions. Thank You for your time !
