Reading: We are reading lots of fairy tales and folktales. We’ve learned that these stories have been retold over time so there are many different versions. Most folktales begin with “Once upon a time…” and end with “and they lived happily ever after.” They have a good and evil characters and usually take place in a palace, kingdom, forest or farm. We are learning to look at these story elements closely in order to compare and contrast them. As your child reads to you at home, ask him/her to identify the main characters, problems, solutions, setting and a sequence of the events that occur. This will help them understand the story and hopefully prompt them to look for and read similar stories. There are several folktales on myon, so this might be a way to get them excited about myon.

Math: We are continuing to learn how to measure objects with dominoes, paperclips, cubes, and rulers. Many of them are having a hard time remembering to line up the ends of the measuring tool and the objects they are measuring. There are many helpful and appropriate Youtube videos that would be worth watching at home. Of course, the most effective way to improve with this skill is to practice measuring real objects. We have been practicing solving addition and subtraction problems within 20, especially by solving fact family problems. For example, when given the numbers 11,7, 4 they should be able to identify the whole (11) and the parts (4 and 7). Next, they should generate the following sentences: 7+4=11, 4+7=11, 11-4=7 and 11-7=4.

Social Studies: We are continuing to study Needs, Wants, Goods, Services, producers (the makers of goods), and consumers (those who buy and use the goods). This week, we will learn that the term scarcity means a shortage of good for those who want to buy them. Also, we will discover ways that people earn money.

Science: We are still studying the weather as it pertains to the four seasons. They should be able to identify the characteristics of each season. Additionally, we are learning that sometimes weather can be severe (tornadoes, blizzards, floods, hurricanes, and thunderstorms). This week, we’ll learn how to stay safe during this dangerous weather.

Writing: We are going to write our own fairy tales. This should be fun! Their stories should include the story elements of a fairy tale ( good character, evil character, setting, problem, and solution).

Have a great weekend! Stay warm and safe 🙂

Homework 12-8

Hi families!
Today, we looked at dominoes and determined their sum (by quickly adding the dots on both sides). Tonight’s homework asks students to find the sum of the dots on the dominoes. Additionally, they have to circle two numbers in the rectangle that have a given sum.

Look at my fabulous readers during Daily 5! Don’t they make you smile???

Homework 12-5

Hi Families,
For tonight’s homework, cut out the inch ruler and measure the objects on the paper. Practice measuring other objects at home as well. We are learning to measure to the nearest inch. 🙂

Week of Dec. 5

Hello Families!
I hope you are enjoying your weekend. Here is a look at this week’s learning:

Spelling

Words

1. such

2. much

3. inch

4. bunch

5. catch

6. hatch

7. be

8. have

9. like

10. will

Reading: We are taking a brief break from informational reading and enjoying some narrative stories this week. We will learn that folktales are stories that have been retold across generations and they always teach a lesson. We are going to continue to use a BMME (beginning, middle, middle, and end) chart to organize our story retelling. Students should be able to read or hear a story and then retell it to you including the important details and main idea. They should also be able to identify the setting (where the story takes place), main characters, and important events in order. They can practice doing this with you at home with their bag of books. Let’s make sure we are reading those books. We have NWEA testing immediately after our winter break, so this will help prepare them to meet their goals.

Social Studies: We are learning how families buy goods or receive services to get what they need and want. This week we will learn the terms producer and consumer. A producer is someone who makes the goods and consumers are the people who buy and use the goods. Here are some examples of goods and services:
Goods: apples, computers, glue, clothes, house, car
Services: teachers, mail delivery, fire fighters, car washes, movie theaters, hair salon

Science; We are learning about different types of weather and that some weather can be severe (tornadoes, hurricanes, blizzards, thunderstorms, floods). We are also learning about ways to stay safe during weather that might be dangerous. Also, we continue to learn about the characteristics of each of the four seasons.

Writing: We are finishing up our publishing for informational writing about the seasons. This week, we will begin writing personal narratives (true stories about ourselves) again. We will begin by writing about a time we were scared.

Math: Please continue practicing how to tell time to the hour and half hour. Many students are finding this challenging. This week, we are learning how to measure using nonstandard (cubes) units and standard (inches and centimeters) units. We continue learning how to read and interpret data (information) on graphs. Additionally, we are still learning how to represent numbers with base tens and ones blocks. Please let me know if you would like me to send some home for additional practice.

Many of the students have told me that they are using Moby Max and Myon at home. This is so exciting. I promise that if they practice math and reading with these tools, they will improve in both areas. I appreciate your support at home and if there is ever anything I can do to help you, please contact me. My goal is (of course) to teach your child, but I want your child to love reading and feel safe and happy at school.

Each month, I will choose a student of the month and “bucket-filler.” Bucket-fillers are people who say and do kind things to others. I will announce the selected students on my blog.

Snack: Please send one or two healthy snacks with your child. Our afternoons are quite long and a healthy snack helps us concentrate until it’s time to go home.

Thank you so much for your support!

Homework 12-1

Hi Families!
I cannot believe it is December!! Tonight’s homework is our first official practice with measuring. We learned that we can measure with nonstandard units (like cubes and paperclips) and with standard units like inches and centimeters. Please help your child line up the object with a ruler at the end starting with zero. Practice measuring objects in your home as this will help them get better at this skill. Have a great night!

11/29 homework

Hello Families,
Today we began taking our Unit 3 test, so the homework that I sent home today was a review. I wanted you to see the format of the test because a lot of my students are having a hard time with the “yes” or “no” component of the test. Please review telling time to the hour and half hour as this is an important and challenging skill. Have a great evening!

November 28

Hello Families! I hope you all enjoyed your Thanksgiving and that you are having a restful and well-deserved break:-) Please remember to complete the Family Tree Project and to read with your child. I allowed them to choose additional books so that they would have new books in their bags over the break. Here is what we will be learning this week.

Spelling

Words

1. chill

2. chick

3. chop

4. chip

5. chin

6. chimp

7. funny

8. was

9. but

10. out

Reading: We are continuing to learn how to read nonfiction books. It is important for them to understand how to use the table of contents, index, glossary, bold words, captions, and photos to navigate informational books. I know that they cannot always read every single word, but using these nonfiction text features will help them understand the text.

Writing: We are almost done finding and recording three facts about our seasons. This week, we will write a topic and closing sentence and hopefully begin publishing our final drafts.

Social Studies: We will continue to learn about economics: needs, wants, goods, and services. Additionally, we will learn the term: Scarcity, which means not enough goods were produced for the consumers who want to buy them. An example is if a customer needed chocolate chips to make cookies and when she went to Kroger to buy some, there weren’t any left. There was a scarcity of chocolate chips.

Science: We are continuing to study weather conditions, seasons, and tools that meteorologists use to observe the weather. One tool that we will learn how to read is a thermometer. If you have thermometers at home, this would be good practice.

Math: We will have our Unit 3 Math test on Tuesday (most likely). Please make sure that your child knows how to tell time to the hour and half hour. I will send plastic clocks home on Monday for those who want extra practice.

Have a great weekend!

November 21

Hello Families! Tonight’s homework involves students writing numbers in expanded form. For instance, 56= 50 +6 or 27= 20+7. I’m explaining that the number’s value changes depending on where it is “sitting, ” so in the number 49, the 4 is actually worth 40 because the 4 is in the ten’s place.
