Movie Night, Homework, and NWEA

Tomorrow is Movie Night at 4:30. Admission is free! Students must be with an adult. We are showing Zootopia 😉

Homework : We briefly learned about fractions today. A fraction is simply an equal part of a whole. We talked about how the number on the bottom (denominator) is the total number of EQUAL parts and the number on the top (numerator) is the number of equal parts that are shaded.

NWEA: We will take our NWEA math test tomorrow morning. We have been preparing for months, so I am expecting it to go very well. Please remind your child that this test is important and they are all expected to meet their Winter goal. It is important that they sleep well tonight, eat a healthy breakfast, and remember to read and answer each question carefully. I am confident that they will do great!!

Have a great night!

Homework Jan. 18

Today’s homework involves the students looking for different ways to represent numbers. Also, they must circle the two numbers (addends) that add to give the sum in the star. Have a great night!

Please remember that we will take the NWEA test for math on Friday morning. You can help prepare your child by making sure he/she gets a filling breakfast, plenty of rest and practice Moby Max tonight and tomorrow. I know they will all do great!

Homework Jan. 17

Hello families!
Tonight’s homework involves students counting and determining the value for tens and ones. They will use the greater than and less than symbol to make the statement true.

Today we learned that singular nouns are nouns that name one person, place or thing and plural nouns name more than one person, place or thing.

Examples of plural nouns: cats, babies, feet, mittens

Examples of singular nouns: monkey, door, girl, stove

We will most likely take our Math NWEA test on Friday morning. Please make sure your child gets lots of rest, eats a filling breakfast and arrives to school on time. I encourage you to talk to your child about the importance of this test. They must take their time listening to each question and working hard on the ENTIRE test. I am so proud of all of them and I know they are going to perform like rockstars!! You might want to send an extra snack to school on this day since we do not receive a snack from the cafeteria on Fridays 😉

Have a great evening!!

Week of Jan. 17-20

Hello Families! I hope you are all enjoying your day together. Here is what our short week looks like:

Spelling Words
fly
flat
flash
flower
place
plug
under
of
some
were

Reading: We are learning how to identify questions and statements. It is important that your child can distinguish between a question and statement and know what punctuation mark goes at the end of each. We are learning to ask and answer questions about a book we have just read. Mainly, we discuss the characters, setting, problem, solution and central message. We will also review the five senses: touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing. We will talk about how authors use interesting words to appeal to the five senses.

Math: We are continuing to learn about place value, tens and ones, and solving addition and subtraction sentences in many different ways. We learned the symbols for greater than, equal to, and less than. Students should be able to put numbers in ascending and descending order and should be able to add two digit numbers together.

Science: We will continue to study weather and weather patterns as we keep track of the weather conditions this month. We will collect, observe, and interpret data about the weather and continue to discuss weather characteristics in each of the four seasons.

Writing: We will continue to work on opinion writing this week. Students should be able to declare an opinion in their first sentence (topic sentence) and then provide at least two reasons supporting their opinion and then give a sense closure in their last statement. Here is an example of a first grade opinion writing piece about the topic: Favorite Fruit

Topic sentence: I love all kinds of fruits, but apples are my favorite. Reasons: One reason that I love apples so much is that they are juicy. Sometimes when I am thirsty, I feel better after eating an apple. Another reason that I think apples are great is that they come in different colors and flavors. I like the green sour ones best, but there are other kinds too! Finally, I love apples because they are easy to eat and not messy at all. My mom lets me take an apple with me in the car. Closing sentence: Fruits are awesome, but apples are the absolute best!

Social Studies: We are continuing to learn about goods (things that people buy), services (things that people do for you like a car wash or hair salon), consumers (customers), and producers( makers of the goods).

Check out these photos from our m&m science experiment:

Remember…

We do not have school on Monday, January 17th in honor of Martin Luther King Jr.

Have a great weekend!

Jan. 12 Homework

Hi families! Tonight’s homework involves students reading a story problem and solving for the missing number. We did one like this in class today. They must fill in the diagram also.

Have a great evening!

Homework 1/11

Tonight’s homework involves the students reading a story problem and then circling the information that would help them solve the problem. They also have to find the missing number in an equation. I am teaching them that in an equation, the biggest number is the “whole” and the smaller numbers are the “parts.” All the parts added together to equal the whole.

I hope you have a great evening!

Reading: We are learning to use illustrations to identify story elements such as Problem, Solution, Characters, and Setting. You can ask your child to identify these elements as they read from their bag of books. Additionally, we are still sequencing stories after we read them by telling what happens in the beginning, middle, and end. Sometimes we do this orally, and most times we write the events of the story in order using these terms: First, Next, After that, and Finally.

Math: We are learning to represent two digit numbers by illustrating the correct number of tens and ones. We are also using the greater than, less than and equal to symbols to show that we can determine the value of numbers. We are continuing to solve addition and subtraction story problems applying different strategies. Please continue to work on telling time to the hour and half hour and let me know if you would like a plastic clock or tens and ones to practice at home.

Science: We are continuing to study the characteristics of the different seasons and weather conditions. We are learning how to stay safe during severe weather and we are comparing and contrasting different types of severe weather. Later this week, we are going to do an experiment where we make observations, predictions, and conclusions about whether m&ms will dissolve in water.

Writing: We will begin our second unit on Opinion Writing. This is where we state an opinion about a topic, provide at least two reasons, and end with a sense of closure. Our first topic will be “Pets” where your child will write an opinion piece trying to convince you that they should get a pet. …sorry 🙂
