Reading: We will learn the difference between Fantasy and Realistic Fiction. Fantasy stories are those that could never happen and may include animals characters that talk, monsters, aliens, dinosaurs, or superheroes. Realistic Fiction is a “made up” story, but it could really happen. We will explore character traits, key details, setting, and beginning, middle and end. We will also look for a moral, lesson, or central message after reading a story. We have been learning about homophones. These are words that sound the same, but are spelled differently and have different meanings. Here are some examples: meet/meat, no/know, past/passed, hair/hare.

Writing: We will begin working on an opinion piece about our favorite special class. They will select their favorite class such as music, gym, art, computer lab, science, or library. They will provide three reasons for liking this class the best.

Social Studies: We are learning that places with an absolute location are those that have addresses and do not move. Here are some examples of places with an absolute location: school, house, fire station, Kroger.

Science: We continue to learn about the sun and its importance for Earth.

Check out the photos from our Parent Open House, Legoland field trip, and Core Values assembly (January and February Bucket Fillers: Leena Alsaidi and Mohamed Murshed Student of the Month for Jan. and Feb.- Mya Zalghout and Fayed Fayed.) Many students received an award for their performance in Reading and Math on NWEA. They were recognized and received an award 🙂
I also included some exemplar writing samples. I am really impressed with some of their writing! I can tell many of you take time to sit with your child and write at home 🙂 Let’s keep up the momentum and great work!

Homework 3-8

Tonight’s homework will be to identify the corners and sides on plane shapes. Click below to see a video on how to classify shapes:

Writing topic: What is your favorite day of the week? Give two reasons. Here is an example:

Topic sentence: Every day of the week is great, but Fridays are my favorite!
One reason is that I love going to school and we get to go to school on Fridays. Another reason is that we always order pizza and watch a movie on Friday night.

Closing Sentence: All the days of the week are fun, but Fridays are the best!

I introduced the students to homophones which are words that sound the same, but their spellings and meanings are different. Here are some examples:

Dear-Deer

there-their-they’re

know-no

bear-bare

Homework March 7

Hi Families!

Our homework tonight is to count the sides and vertices on the shapes. Vertices are the points where the edges or sides meet. They can be thought of as corners.

Their writing topic is to write their opinion about their favorite food. They should start with a topic sentence which states their opinion. Here is an example.

I love all kinds of food, but pizza is my favorite.

Next, they must provide at least two reasons why that food is their favorite. Here are examples:

First, I love cheese and vegetables and you can add as many of these toppings as you want to pizza! Another reason, is pizza is cool because you can eat it with your hands. Finally, pizza is fun to eat with your friends. I just love pizza parties! There are so many types of foods that I enjoy, but pizza is my favorite (this last sentence is the closing sentence.)

March 6

I loved having you visit our classrooms today! I hope to see more families next month! What a wonderful way for us to come together for the benefit of our children!

Tonight’s homework: a bit more work with fact families. This was REALLY challenging for some of my students. Let’s continue practicing this skill.

Writing topic: Each child received a book. They are to write a BMME chart describing important events from the beginning, middle, middle, and end.

March 6-10

Hello Families! Wow! We had the best time at Lego Land on Friday! I want to thank all of the parents and families who joined us because your efforts were so helpful and made our trip even more memorable. I will post pictures soon!

Here are our plans for the week:

Spelling

7. once

I know we had an exciting and busy week, but many students did not spend much time practicing their spelling words. Please encourage them to do this at home. They should be focusing on the spelling patterns. This week’s pattern is -ay

Reading: We are focusing on fiction stories this week. Retelling (reporting the important events of the story in order) is an important part of comprehension, so we will practice this week. Students can do this orally or written with his/her books at home. Also, we are practicing how to ask questions about a book. Many students are still unsure how to distinguish between a question and statement. Finally, we will focus on identifying the central message or lesson in a book.

Writing: We wrote concrete poems last week. The children did an awesome job! We will display them in our classroom, so feel free to look for them. A great time to do this would be at our Open House on Monday from 9-10.

Math: We are going to start learning about how to tell the difference between 2 D and 3D shapes. There are a ton of YouTube videos and songs that can help your child with this as well. We will look at the attributes or characteristics of shapes and learn how to identify the shape, its faces, vertices, and edges eventually. As I graded their Unit 6 math tests, I noticed that many of them had difficulty with fact families, so click on the video below to review this. I will also be reviewing it this week in class. I will send some fact family activities home with some of my students for extra practice.

Social Studies: We are continuing to look at maps and symbols. We didn’t get a chance to create a classroom map last week, but we’ll try again this week. Some of their illustrations of maps that they’ve seen were awesome! I will post those pictures soon.

Science: We continue to learn that the sun is a star that provides us with warmth, heat and energy. Earth’s rotation around the sun is the reason for the seasons. Earth’s rotation on its access causes day and night.

Let’s have an awesome week!

Homework

March 1

Tonight’s homework is a review for our Unit 6 math test. We will take this test tomorrow.

Writing topic: Write a concrete poem about someone you love. A concrete poem is a poem written in the shape of the topic of the poem. They write how they feel about someone they love in the shape of a heart.

Below are some videos to show what we are learning in reading and math. One is about syllables, and the other is about

Feb. 28

Homework tonight involves students making a ten to solve problems. I drew the circles in to help. We will continue to work on this…it’s tricky!

Writing Topic: Make a list of maps that you’ve seen.

We are looking at and constructing maps in social studies. Please look at different maps (the internet is a great resource when you supervise).

Also, please have your child use Moby Max and Myon at home. I am going to be assigning lessons on there that are specific to what your child is learning in math. These programs strongly align with our curriculum and I promise they will help reinforce what we are learning about in class.

Movie Night is Friday, March 3rd.
