Week of March 27

Hello Families! This is our last week together before Spring Break, so I am going to make sure that all of my students have plenty of good fit books in their bags to read over the break. Here is what our week will look like:

Spelling

Words

1. five

2. drive

3. mice

4. dime

5. time

6. slice

7. been

8. work

9. off

10. cold

Reading: We are going to read informational books this week. We will revisit nonfiction text features such as glossaries, bold words, headings, tables of contents, photos, captions, and indexes in order to comprehend what we are reading. We read nonfiction books to gain information about a topic and this type of reading is very important in order to strengthen academic vocabulary and understanding. I strongly encourage you to visit libraries, bookstores and our myon site in order to provide opportunities for your child to read all sorts of books. This will make him/her stronger in reading and ALL subject areas.

Math: We will begin learning about fractions (equal parts of a whole). When wholes are divided into equal parts or fair shares, we can talk about these parts with fractions. The top number (numerator) tells what part is colored or missing and the bottom number (denominator) tells how many equal pieces the whole is divided into. I encourage you to practice fractions at home with your child. Divide shapes such as circles, squares, and rectangles into equal parts and color a fraction. Your child should be able to tell you the fraction that goes with each picture.

Science: Living Things: We are learning about the needs of plants and animals. We will read informational books about plants and study the plant parts. Students will learn that plants need air, water, space, sun, and nutrients to grow.

Social Studies: We are continuing to look at maps. Students should be able to identify the land and water on a map. Exposing your child to all sorts of maps is helpful for this unit and to develop his/her map reading skills. We will also look at human characteristics which are parts of our earth that humans have created such as buildings, roads, parks, etc. Physical characteristics are things that were created through earth’s natural processes such as mountains, oceans, hills, trees, and rocks.

Some of you have received a conference appointment sheet. Please contact me if this time does not work for you and we will reschedule. It is VERY important that I meet with you. Thank you for your continued support!

March 22

The homework tonight will be another review for our Math test. Below is a helpful video.
We are also learning that two “pushed” together is compound word.

Writing Topic: What is your favorite Daily 5 choice? You need a topic sentence, two reasons, and a closing sentence. Here is an example:

When it’s my turn to make my Daily 5 choice, I always choose Read to Someone. First of all, I love reading to my friend. We like the same kind of books. Another reason is that we help each other when we get stuck on words. Finally, its fun to read with different partners. All the choices are great, but Read to Someone is the best!

Reading: We are learning to identify the central message in the stories that we read. This is the lesson that the author teaches us through the characters. We are also continuing to identify the story elements: setting, characters, major events (beginning, middle and end), and problem/solution. We will look at ways that authors try to appeal to our five senses with words like: crunch (hearing), ouch (touch), beautiful (sight), delicious (taste) , “smelled like roses” (smell).

Math: We are continuing to distinguish between 2 D and 3 D shapes by looking at their attributes (numbers of sides, edges, vertices, length of sides ) etc. We are even building these shapes with materials such as marshmallows and toothpicks. We are also working on the make a ten strategy. Please watch the videos posted on the blog as the students find them so helpful to reinforce what we are learning about in class.

Social Studies: We are sorting examples and nonexamples of places with absolute location. Places with absolute location do not move and have an address.

Science: We will look at data about the relationship between the amount of daylight and the time of year. We will then create a graph representing this information and read and interpret the data to answer questions.

Writing: We are completing our opinion writing about our favorite special class. They did a really good job with this, so look for their published pieces soon.

I strongly encourage my students to go on myon, moby max, and khan academy at home. These are excellent resources that help reinforce the curriculum and extend their learning. I am always available for assistance, so please never hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Have a great weekend!

Homework 3-16

Homework tonight asks students to look at 3 D shapes again. See the video below for an explanation of vertices, edges, and faces

Writing topic: Do you like indoor or outdoor recess better? State your opinion and give at least two reasons.
Here is an example:

Recess is awesome, and I like indoor recess better. One reason is because we get to play with Legos and I love creating buildings. Another reason is because I love to do puzzles and Mrs. Klan has a ton of puzzles! Any kind of recess is great, but I like indoor recess best!

Many of our students do not have crayons. Please make sure that your child has a set of crayons as we need crayons for many of our assignments. Thank you for your cooperation!

Homework 3-15

Tonight’s homework is revisiting the “make a ten” strategy that we’ve been working on. They’re getting so much better at it!
