Reading: We will continue reading informational texts this week. Students should be able to identify and use the table of contents, bold words, glossaries, indexes, photos, labels, captions, and headings in non-fiction texts. We will learn that authors have a purpose for writing and we will identify these reasons. Students should be able to identify key details or interesting facts using these texts features or reading non-fiction texts at their instructional levels. This week, we will read informational articles or texts and attempt to identify the author’s purpose for writing these pieces. Additionally, we will state or record interesting key details about the topic.

Math: We are revisiting two digit numbers. Students must know that a two digit number has a tens and one place and that the digits in each of these places represents a certain number of tens and ones. For example, 87 is eight tens (80) and 7 ones or 80+7 We are learning to add and subtract two digit numbers. I encourage you to watch the videos on khan academy that I have posted about addition and subtraction with two and three digit numbers. We are also continuing to study fractions. Students should know that fractions represent equal parts of a whole. We are learning to divide shapes into thirds, fourths, and halves. Again, please watch the videos I have posted with your child. Additional videos can be found on youtube.

Science: We will be learning about the needs of plants and animals. We hope to plant seeds this week in order to simulate a lawn. This will teach us that plants need light, water, air, soil, and sun to grow.

Social Studies: We will learn the difference between human and physical characteristics. We are continuing to look at land and water on maps.

Writing: We are continuing to gather facts and information about an animal in order to write an animal report.

Please never hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns. Have a great rest of your weekend!
