Reading: This week we will look at the words and phrases that authors use to appeal to the five senses. This makes it more interesting to read. Also, we will use information from the words and illustrations to comprehend the story. Although your child may not be able to read every word of a picture book, he/she can look closely at illustrations, titles, and words to infer information about the story.
Reading Bags: Please, please, please continue to read from their bag of books EVERY evening. Children learn to read by reading and practicing strategies at school AND at home will help them be successful. Reading is a guaranteed way to improve comprehension, build a strong vocabulary, and gain knowledge in all subject areas. An added bonus is that it is a wonderful way to bond and have conversations with your child.
Writing: We are working on personal narratives. These are true stories about themselves and we are learning to begin with a topic sentence, add three events in order and end with a closing sentence. Here is an example of what a first grader should be able to write with guidance from an adult or teacher:
I can remember a time that I was brave (Topic Sentence). First, I feel and scraped my knee. I was bleeding! (Beginning). Next, I ran home to my mom and asked for a band aid. It hurt so bad, but I didn’t cry (Middle). Finally, I ran back outside to play with my friends even though my knee still hurt (End). It was hard to be brave, but it made me feel proud (closing sentence).
Math: We are learning to represent numbers with tens and ones (longs and cubes). Additionally, we are learning to compare two numbers in order to determine the greater numbers. Some students are finding it challenging to sequence numbers. Please work on this at home. They should be able to tell which numbers come before and after a given number. Using a number grid and number line can be helpful.
Science: We will use syringes and rubber tubes to discover that what air does when it is in a small space. We have a new program this year and the children are loving it!
Social Studies: This week, we will learn that some people have POWER WITH AUTHORITY. This means that they have the right to tell you to do something. Examples of people with Power with Authority are: police officers, principals, parents, teachers etc. We will also discuss situations that are fair and unfair.
Please remember that our field trip permission slips and money are due on Friday, September 29. Thank you for your support!
