November 20-21

Hello Families,

How do you like this rain? I do not ;-). We have a short week, but let’s make it a good one! We will not have a spelling test on Tuesday, but I will post the words that students will be tested on on December 1.

Spelling
Words:
1. chill
2. chick
3. chop
4. chip
5. chin
6. chimp
7. funny
8. was
9. but
10. out
11. ____
12. ____

Many parents expressed concern about spelling during parent-teacher conferences. Although it is important for students to learn, read, and use spelling patterns in their writing, please do not dedicate more than a few minutes each night studying spelling words. Your time is better spent reading and writing with your child. I promise that your child will greatly benefit from looking at and studying words in print in the context of a book rather than a spelling list. I strongly urge you to shift your focus from memorizing spelling words to reading language-rich stories and nonfiction texts. Let’s not worry about spelling test scores right now. Instead, let’s focus on helping our children learn to read and answer questions about books. If you should have any questions or concerns about this goal, please see me.

Reading:

This week we will continue to use nonfiction text features to locate information in informational books.

Math:

We will review story problems, telling time to the hour and half hour, and fact families. The students will take a test on Tuesday, so I will attempt to download a practice test following this post.

Social Studies:

I will be sending home a family tree project. Please read the directions carefully and complete this with your child over the Thanksgiving break. This should be a fun and engaging activity for you to do together!

Science:

We are continuing to learn about weather and seasonal patterns. We are looking at weather maps and charts to compare changes in the sky and weather.

Have a great weekend. Let’s hope we see the sun soon!

Homework Thursday

Tonight’s homework is a telling time worksheet. Some students have a telling time to the half hour worksheet and some have one that asks them to tell time to the quarter hour. They must also circle possessive nouns. These are nouns that show ownership or belonging.

Tuesday’s Homework

We are still learning how to write fact family addition and subtraction sentences, so this will be our homework for Tuesday. They will also circle the possessive nouns. A possessive noun show’s ownership. For example: I will take my dad’s car to the station. Whose car will you take? Dad’s car (the car that belongs to dad).

Monday Homework

Monday’s homework will be a worksheet on fact families. The numbers in a fact family consist of a whole (the greatest number) and two parts (the smaller numbers). These numbers can form two addition and two subtraction sentences. Example: 7+4= 11, 4+7= 11, 11-7=4 and 11-4=7 The numbers in this fact family are 4, 7, and 11. 4 and 7 are the parts and 11 is the whole.

They must also circle the words that need to be capitalized.

Reading: We are still learning to use nonfiction text features to gather key details and information about a topic. This week, we will focus on learning to use the headings, table of contents, and glossary. We will also look at the pictures and words in informational books. We will use the information in the pictures and words to gather key details about a topic.

Math: We will be learning about fact families this week. Every addition sentence has two subtraction sentences that match. For example, 2+4=6 is the addition sentence that matches 6-4=2 and 6-2=4. The six is the whole and the 2 and 4 are the parts. We will also continue to solve addition and subtraction word problems by counting on, using a number line, or using illustrations.

Science: We are learning about the changes in the sky and weather patterns. We are creating graphs with weather, temperature, and daylight information to interpret patterns in the weather.

Social Studies: We are learning that all families are different and have their own set of traditions, rituals, rules and cultures.

Have a great week and please look for your conference reminder in your child’s folder 🙂

Homework Wednesday

Homework on Wednesday is a worksheet with addition number problems. They must show their thinking on a number line. They also will match the contractions.

Please join the PTA for a meeting at 9:00 on Thursday morning. Following the meeting, you are welcome to visit our classrooms.

Please look for conference reminders for your appointment with me.

Week of November 6-10

Happy Saturday, Families!

Reminder: No school on Tuesday

Conferences: I sent home reminder notes for parents who are scheduled for this Thursday. If you are unable to meet with me at that time, it is VERY IMPORTANT that you contact me so that we can reschedule. I am committed to meeting with 100% of you, so I will be very flexible and accommodating.

Here are our plans for the week:

Spelling
Words
1. she
2. shop
3. shut
4. show
5. ship
6. shout
7. him
8. he
9. us
10. on

Reading: We are continuing to read informational (nonfiction) texts, so it is important for students to use the correct language when identifying nonfiction text features. These features help readers find information in the book: Title page, table of contents, glossary, index, captions, headings/subheadings, labels, photos, bold words. We will look at these features more closely this week to gather information about a main topic. We call that information KEY DETAILS.
I strongly urge you to have your child watch the videos on my blog. They always reinforce what we are talking about and learning in class.

Writing: We will begin our unit on informational writing this week. We will begin by writing about a topic that we have been learning about in science: weather/seasons. They will use informational resources to find facts or key details about as season and write an informational piece about it. Here is an example of a first grade informational writing piece about summer:

Summer is the season after spring and it lasts until September (topic sentence). One fact about summer is that the temperature gets very hot. Many people wear shorts and head to the beach. Another fact is there are more hours of daylight, so many people stay outside until late evening. Finally, we do not have school during the summer. I miss my teacher! Summer is coming soon!(closing sentence)

Math: Please continue to practice telling time with your plastic clocks at home. We are learning to tell time to the hour and half hour. When it is 3:30, we say “It is half-past 3 o’clock.” We are also learning about place value, counting tens and ones, and solving word problems with drawings, counters, and other strategies.

Social studies: We are learning about Needs and Wants this week. A need is something that we must have to live. A want is something that we wish to have, but don’t need to survive. We are also talking about goods and services. A good is something that is made or produced. A service is something that someone does for us, like getting a haircut, going to the car wash etc.

Science: We are looking at data (information) on a weather graph and interpreting that information. We are learning that a meteorologist uses many tools (anemometer, thermometer, wind vane, rain gauge) etc to study and report about weather.

I hope you have an awesome weekend!

Thursday Homework

Today we learned that each number has a place value assigned to it. We are looking at two digit numbers and using tens and ones to represent them. In the number 24, the 2 is worth 20 and the 4 is worth 4. So, 20+4=24 would be called expanded form. Their homework is a place value worksheet. They must also circle proper nouns. click here
