Toy Day

We earned our gumball reward and your child may bring in a game or toy tomorrow as long as it is NOT ELECTRONIC. Please know that your child is responsible for whatever game or toy that they bring in. Thank you!

Tuesday homework

Tonight’s homework will be another tens and ones worksheet. They must also circle all of the letters that should be capitalized.

Just a reminder that we will take our NWEA reading test tomorrow. Please make sure your child goes to bed early and has a healthy breakfast. Talk to your child about taking his/her time on the test as this is very important.

Wednesday: Skating party Lincoln Park (see flyer)

Thursday: PTA meeting in the cafeteria at 9:00

Reading: We will be comparing and contrasting the experiences and adventures of characters in stories. This means that we will look at similarities and differences among these characters. Students will continue to practice retelling the main events of a story. This is important because retelling does not involve stating every detail. Students should begin being able to distinguish between the important and less relevant details in a story. They use information from the pictures and words to gather the important parts (key details) of the text.

Writing: We read an article about apples and watched an informational video about bananas. They had to decide which was a better snack based on the information we gathered. When writing our opinion pieces, they had to use evidence from the article or informational video. They are doing a great job!

Math: We are continuing to solve addition and subtraction word problems in a variety of ways. Additionally, they must be able to compare numbers, select the greater number, represent two digit numbers using tens and ones, and solve for the missing number in a word problem or number model. I am going to begin sending a packet of challenging math home each week, which will contain problems or concepts that are beyond what we are learning about in class such as counting money, telling time to the minute, rounding numbers, adding two digit numbers, multiplication, etc. Please understand that these are not mandatory. Your child does not need to complete them. I am trying to expose them to advanced math so to better prepare them for upcoming lessons, NWEA testing and second grade. If you do not wish to receive this packet, simply write “NO THANK YOU” on the packet and return it to school with your child. My goal is never to frustrate my students, but many students (and parents) have requested additional work. Youtube and khan academy.com are great resources that have videos on all of the topics that I am sending home.

Social Studies: We are continuing to learn about good, services, producers, consumers, scarcity, trade, and jobs.

Science: This week, we learned that sound is caused by vibrations. We can stop sounds by stopping vibrations. Volume tells how loud or soft a sound is, and pitch tells how high or low the sound is. Our ears are the receivers and the sound is the source. This week, we will begin studying light.

NWEA: We will take the NWEA reading test on Wednesday morning. It is so important for your child to sleep well the night before and have a healthy breakfast Wednesday morning. I am so proud to be their teacher! They all performed like superstars on the Math NWEA test. Keep up the great work at home, parents. You are awesome!

Thursday: Math Night
Friday: Half day : dismissal at 11:45

Have a fantastic weekend!

Thursday’s homework

Tomorrow’s homework will go with today’s blog post. Tonight’s homework was actually a challenge to see if they could figure out the perimeter of a shape. They simply have to add the lengths of all the sides of the shape. Have a great night!

Kleenex

Hello Families,
We are completely out of Kleenex, so if you are able to send a box in, that would be super helpful. Thank you!

Wednesday Homework and NWEA

Tonight’s homework will be more practice word problems. Additionally, they must add silent e to word to make new words. Please have your child continue to practice their fractions packet, as we will be taking the NWEA math test tomorrow morning. It is very important that your child gets plenty of rest tonight and has a healthy breakfast tomorrow:-) You may also want to talk about the importance of reading each question carefully and taking his/her time, as this is an important assessment.

Reading and Writing (ELA): We are still reading fiction books and identifying key details about the setting, characters, and major events in a story. We learn this information from the illustrations and the words. Students should be able to look at clues from the illustrations and the words and then use this information to answer questions about the story. We are also learning to look at information about two different topics or opinions and use this information as evidence in order to write opinion pieces. This week, we gather information from two different sources about apples and bananas and then write about which fruit is the best snack (by providing reasons why).

Math: We are learning to apply different strategies (drawing a picture, using a number line, writing number models, using counters etc. ) to solve addition and subtraction story problems. I strongly urge you to look at the story problems on the math pretest that was posted earlier. Ask your child to solve those problems using different strategies.I am teaching them to solve for the missing number, solve for the whole or part, and hop on the number line to find the answer. This is a very challenging chapter and the skills developed when solving story problems are so important and will help them become excellent problem solvers.

Social Studies: We are continuing to learn about the economy this week. We will learn that sometimes there is a scarcity (shortage) of goods. Also, we will learn that sometimes people trade goods and services. Finally, we will learn ways that people earn money (jobs).

Science: We will learn how sound travels from the source to the receiver. We will read about various musical instruments and the sounds that they make.

NWEA: We will take the NWEA math test this week (probably on Thursday). I will send some practice packets home this week. I sent one about solid (3 D) and plane (2D) shapes on Friday. I am putting one together about fractions, as these skills will be on the test. Please go over these with your children. It is not necessary to hand them in.

Thursday’s homework

Thursday’s homework will be a worksheet on adding with regrouping. This is excellent practice for our upcoming NWEA test. They must also circle the pronouns. A pronoun replaces a noun. Please have your child watch the videos below for review and reinforcement:
