Reading: We are learning to identify the central message in the stories that we read. This is the lesson that the author teaches us through the characters. We are also continuing to identify the story elements: setting, characters, major events (beginning, middle and end), and problem/solution. We will look at ways that authors try to appeal to our five senses with words like: crunch (hearing), ouch (touch), beautiful (sight), delicious (taste) , “smelled like roses” (smell).

Math: We are continuing to distinguish between 2 D and 3 D shapes by looking at their attributes (numbers of sides, edges, vertices, length of sides ) etc. We are even building these shapes with materials such as marshmallows and toothpicks. We are also working on the make a ten strategy. Please watch the videos posted on the blog as the students find them so helpful to reinforce what we are learning about in class.

Social Studies: We are sorting examples and nonexamples of places with absolute location. Places with absolute location do not move and have an address.

Science: We will look at data about the relationship between the amount of daylight and the time of year. We will then create a graph representing this information and read and interpret the data to answer questions.

Writing: We are completing our opinion writing about our favorite special class. They did a really good job with this, so look for their published pieces soon.

I strongly encourage my students to go on myon, moby max, and khan academy at home. These are excellent resources that help reinforce the curriculum and extend their learning. I am always available for assistance, so please never hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.

Have a great weekend!
