Reading: We are learning to use illustrations to identify story elements such as Problem, Solution, Characters, and Setting. You can ask your child to identify these elements as they read from their bag of books. Additionally, we are still sequencing stories after we read them by telling what happens in the beginning, middle, and end. Sometimes we do this orally, and most times we write the events of the story in order using these terms: First, Next, After that, and Finally.
Math: We are learning to represent two digit numbers by illustrating the correct number of tens and ones. We are also using the greater than, less than and equal to symbols to show that we can determine the value of numbers. We are continuing to solve addition and subtraction story problems applying different strategies. Please continue to work on telling time to the hour and half hour and let me know if you would like a plastic clock or tens and ones to practice at home.
Science: We are continuing to study the characteristics of the different seasons and weather conditions. We are learning how to stay safe during severe weather and we are comparing and contrasting different types of severe weather. Later this week, we are going to do an experiment where we make observations, predictions, and conclusions about whether m&ms will dissolve in water.
Writing: We will begin our second unit on Opinion Writing. This is where we state an opinion about a topic, provide at least two reasons, and end with a sense of closure. Our first topic will be “Pets” where your child will write an opinion piece trying to convince you that they should get a pet. …sorry 🙂
