English Language Arts: We are taking a break from fiction stories and are revisiting nonfiction (informational text). This week, we will look at texts to see how pieces of information are connected. For example, roots and leaves are connected because they are both parts of a plant. Bees and flowers are connected because bees drink nectar from a flower in order to make honey. They will also use the table of contents to locate information and record key details in a text. We will choose a topic to write about this week for informational writing. They will use nonfiction books to look for and record information on a thinking map. They will then write a topic sentence, provide three facts about their topic, and end with a closing sentence.
Math: We are continuing to explore 2 D and 3 D shapes. Students are learning to look at the attributes such as the number of sides, edges, corners, and angles to distinguish between shapes. They should be able to do the following after this unit in geometry:
1. Distinguish between shapes that are not polygons and shapes that are polygons
2. Identify quadrilaterals (closed, four-sided shapes)
3. Identify: circles, squares, ovals, rectangles, triangles, rhombuses, trapezoids, and hexagons (these are 2 D or plane shapes).
4. Identify solid shapes (3 D) and be able to count their edges, vertices, and faces: Cube, rectangular prism, pyramid, sphere, cylinder, cone, triangular prism.
5. Sort 2 D and 3 D shapes
Science: We are reviewing sound and light before beginning our next unit, Life Science. I will attempt to attach a flip chart that reviews these concepts.
Social Studies: We are continuing to study absolute location (locations with an address) and human and physical characteristics.
Have a great weekend!
