ELA (reading and writing): We are continuing to read nonfiction texts and we are learning how to use text features such as glossaries, tables of contents, headings, and photos to locate and gather information. We are talking about ways that texts about the same topic are similar and different. Also, we are learning how to look for and record information about a topic in order to write an informational piece with a topic sentence, key details (at least two facts), and a closing sentence.

Math: This week, we will be focusing on understanding the meaning of the equal sign. Students are learning to make sure that both sides of the equal sign are exactly the same. We are learning to use the equal sign to decide whether equations are true or false. I will send a packet home on Monday. These are optional and intended to challenge your child and prepare him/her for the spring NWEA test.

Social Studies: This week, we will complete our social studies assessment. Many students have taken the first part of the test already and have done great! This week, they will be asked to write about a time that they needed and/or wanted something. They will have to be able to explain the difference between a consumer and producer. They will have to be able to write a list of ways that people earn money.

Valentine’s Day: Students may bring in a WRAPPED treat on Wednesday, February 14. They may also bring in Valentine’s Day cards to pass out. We have 22 students in our class 🙂
