Reading and Writing (ELA): We are still reading fiction books and identifying key details about the setting, characters, and major events in a story. We learn this information from the illustrations and the words. Students should be able to look at clues from the illustrations and the words and then use this information to answer questions about the story. We are also learning to look at information about two different topics or opinions and use this information as evidence in order to write opinion pieces. This week, we gather information from two different sources about apples and bananas and then write about which fruit is the best snack (by providing reasons why).
Math: We are learning to apply different strategies (drawing a picture, using a number line, writing number models, using counters etc. ) to solve addition and subtraction story problems. I strongly urge you to look at the story problems on the math pretest that was posted earlier. Ask your child to solve those problems using different strategies.I am teaching them to solve for the missing number, solve for the whole or part, and hop on the number line to find the answer. This is a very challenging chapter and the skills developed when solving story problems are so important and will help them become excellent problem solvers.
Social Studies: We are continuing to learn about the economy this week. We will learn that sometimes there is a scarcity (shortage) of goods. Also, we will learn that sometimes people trade goods and services. Finally, we will learn ways that people earn money (jobs).
Science: We will learn how sound travels from the source to the receiver. We will read about various musical instruments and the sounds that they make.
NWEA: We will take the NWEA math test this week (probably on Thursday). I will send some practice packets home this week. I sent one about solid (3 D) and plane (2D) shapes on Friday. I am putting one together about fractions, as these skills will be on the test. Please go over these with your children. It is not necessary to hand them in.
