Week May 30-June 2

Hello Families! I hope you enjoyed this long weekend. We had some showers and some sun, so hopefully you were able to get outside for a bit. Here are our plans for the week:

Wednesday: We will have our first grade picnic. Students can bring outdoor playground equipment from home. They may also bring a blanket to sit on. We will have popsicles as well. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately, as we will be outside for over an hour.

Reading: We will continue to read fictional stories and practice retelling the important events in order. We sometimes use a BMME chart to do this, but we also summarize stories orally. Additionally, we will be studying the characters and describing their behaviors and traits. Students should be able to identify the story elements such as main characters, setting, and main events.

Writing: We are going to write personal narratives. They must have a topic sentence, three interesting events in order, and a closing sentence.

Math: Students will continue to learn different strategies to add and subtract within 20 (make a ten, drawings, and decomposing numbers).

Social Studies: We will continue to look at life in the past and present including communication, schools, jobs, toys, and family life. We will also learn about important events such as Presidents’ Day, Martin Luther King Day, and Independence Day.

Science: Students continue to study plant and animal needs, characteristics and passed on traits, and life cycles.

Let’s have a great week!
